PA Politics: Shuster Faces Another Well-Known Name

BY BRETT LIEBERMAN
Of Our Washington Bureau

No matter how many names appeared on the ballot, for more than a generation voters in the sprawling 9th Congressional District have known the name of only one congressional candidate: Shuster.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, who inherited the seat his father gave up in February 2001, garnered 74 percent of the vote against two challengers in the 2002 Republican primary. It's an election result not too different from the ones his father, former U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster, R-Everett, used to roll up.

This year, Shuster, R-Blair County, is facing a stiffer challenge from a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Michael DelGrosso, who comes to the campaign with his own famous family.

A year of campaigning by DelGrosso and his well-known name -- thanks to his family's DelGrosso Amusement Park and DelGrosso Foods, a spaghetti sauce manufacturer -- has made this year's campaign more competitive.
