An alternative to Blanche Lincoln
In this year's Democratic primary, Senator Blanche Lincoln is facing a Democratic opponent. I really like this lady and would like to introduce her to people here on DU.

Lisa Burks has chosen to challenge Blanche for several reasons with the most notable one being the Senator's voting record which follows:

MY OPPONENT'S RECORD
My opponent, Blanche Lincoln, has voted yes to the following Bush initiatives:

Use of force to grant George Bush expansive powers to declare war on a sovereign nation without consent of the Congress.

The Medicare Reform Bill (Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Plan) -- Disastrous for seniors everywhere. This bill does nothing but privatize Medicare as we know it.

The Economic Growth and Reconciliation Act -- Implemented the largest round of the Bush tax cuts only for the wealthy seen thus far.

The USA Patriot Act -- Infringes on and restricts the basic freedoms of law abiding American citizens. There should never be limits to freedoms in a democracy.

The confirmation of Tom Ridge as Director of the Department of Homeland Security.

The appointment of Asa Hutchinson as the Undersecretary to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Omnibus Spending Bill -- Removed overtime pay from our nation's workers.

The Bush/Cheney Energy Plan -- Devastating to our environment.

Here is some more information about Ms. Burks:

Excerpt:
"

I would like to tell you who I am and what I do.

I worked for the State of Arkansas in Unemployment Insurance. I know first-hand about how devastating the unemployment situation is in our state and in America. Over 70,000 Arkansans have lost their jobs under the Bush Administration. Only a handful of jobs have been created in our state. This is unacceptable, yet nothing was done to create jobs in Arkansas and return people to the workforce.

I am the founder and former President of the Hot Springs Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and former Vice President of Legislation for Arkansas NOW. I formed the National Coalition for Verified Voting (NCVV) and currently serve as the National Coordinator for NCVV and work to defend the vote in several states, including Arkansas, as well as nationally and internationally.

SNIP

"I protested a visit by George W. Bush to Little Rock on November 9, 2003 and experienced first-hand what it is like to have my First Amendment rights violated. As a result of being placed in a "containment area", I am now involved in an ACLU lawsuit. Mr. Bush, this is America and we won't stand for your dictatorial behavior here. Americans take our rights and liberties very seriously. That is what makes our democracy strong.

I am fed up with the direction our great country has been taken. I have fought to defend our democracy, our benefits and our freedoms. I waited and waited for someone to do something to set things right but no one did. Something had to be done, so I decided to run for the United States Senate. I feel the critical battles are there. Someone has been asleep at the wheel and it is time for them to move over and let someone else who is wide awake take the wheel. I will take my determination to right wrongs, and my commitment and resolve to do right by the people of Arkansas to the United States Senate."

1. Thanks for the Information and Link
She sounds closer to my beliefs than Sen. Lincoln, but feel she will have an uphill battle. Good Luck with the campaign.

2. You're right, of course.
That's one reason that I chose to post her info here. I really like her but KNOW it will be hard. At our county's fundraiser Saturday night, she was met with little applause. That was distressing to me. I can't understand why Blanch Lincoln is so popular. Thanks for the "Good Luck".
