Poll question: Regardless of who is elected--do you think the draft is coming back? |
|
Regardless of who is elected--John Kerry or George W. Bush, do you think the military draft will be coming back?

I thought the fact that Al-Sadr was asking for UN peacekeepers was the best thing I've heard in an age. More of that kind of talk from Iraqis and a Dem president, and we may be able to end this whole mess.

2. I think Bush won't have any choice |
|
I think Kerry might have a choice; and Kerry will certainly try to avoid it. So my answer is undecided; it will come back if Bush is reelected, it might come back if Kerry is elected, but probably won't. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

3. Yes - within six months to a year |
|
If Junior's reelected. I told my husband this the other evening, after The Villiage Idiot's press conference.
Rumsfeld is truly this generation's Robert McNamara.

4. To me, it's a stark choice on this one: |
|
If Dub's elected this year, the Draft's BACK for next year...
If John Kerry is elected, there WILL NOT be a military draft..next year or later.
Plain enough, IMO! :kick:

Kerry can probably solve the problem without resorting to the draft.

6. yes, but does he want to solve it that way? |

I'd say the jury is out.
His backing of national service is very likely to lead to a military draft as well, in my opinion.
If I were draft age and a conscientious objector, I'd be exploring my options right now.

7. I voted "Yes," but I think .... |
|
... if it's Kerry, he won't bring back the dormant Selective Service System but rather he'll support the McCain/Bayh "National Service" bill and fiddle with it to include both military and civilian options.
OH .. by the way, I'd be strongly supportive.
Sure the draft is scary and I hate it, but having the United States Military develop into a glorified Republican Party militia is even scarier and I hate that more.

8. They will have to bring the draft back |
|
For all those free market types they are finding out that the specialties they need in the military pay $500-$1500 a day with a contractor as a mercenary. So no one with those skills is reuping or enlisting, they are chasing the big contractor bucks. We were told this would happen with a huge mercenary contingent. Why die for 10 grand a year when you can make 10 grand a week?

9. Regardless of who is President |
|
they will bring back the draft. Kerry can't undo all the Bush mistakes that quickly. But I think Kerry won't want to extend it much and I know he won't enjoy it, like Bush does.

10. just a guess, but I'll vote no |
|
If * is returned to the White House, clearly they will continue to go with the mercenaries, or contractors as we're supposed to call them now, so that Halliburton etc. will continue to get its excessive cut for supplying manpower. With Kerry, there is a good chance of working with the UN to get manpower from other countries. Either way, I'm not seeing a draft -- for the evil-doers it would cut into their profits, for Kerry, simply wouldn't be necessary to rely on U.S. manpower only.

11. Clearly much more likely if Bush gets elected. |
|
Didn't vote because I so strongly disagree with the premise: "Regardless of who is elected"

12. What I'd love to see is a return of the draft -- |
|
-- and a totally sane foreign policy.
It'd be great if there were some form of compulsory military service, which was short term (8 moths, to a year, which you could serve in blocks, perhaps) and well-paid, and involved great training, not just with weapons, but in other areas -- computuer science, mechanical engineering, and even law or medicine.
Perhaps there should be exemptions, but if you take advantage of an exemption, perhaps, say, you would forego a tax credit or a grant that you could use for education at any public college or university (for grad or undergrad).
I think if more people felt they had a stake in foreign affairs, we'd have better foreign policy.
Why I don't want to see is people getting drafted to be cannon fodder for fascist imperialists and to be pawns in a global battle which ultimately is not in their best interests.

This draft talk is stupid. The only way the draft will be reinstated is if there is another world war and if we are getting the shit beat out of us.
