2. It Depends on the Governor

I'm assuming the premise of you article is...If Kerry wins, then the state the Governor from the state he is from would get to pick the new Senator. On the whole I agree with you. But, there are probably a few states that have decent Republican governors (Alaska is NOT one of them, but thank God Murkowski is governor, because we might get a Democrat in the Senate thanks to him -- sorry I digress). But there are also a few states that have Democratic Governors that would remind us all of ole' Zell Miller. So, I think we'd have to look at who the governor is. But on the whole I agree with you. Besides, I'm not sure it has to be a Senator.
One last word, im my rambling. Isn't MA. governor a republican?

but the Democrats have solid control of the legislature, veto-proof, so they'll be able to make a way for us to hold the seat.

Now for your main point, I disagree. Because as long as a Republican's in the seat, it's another vote for Frist, and we can't afford anymore. But we don't have any Zell Miller governors. The most conservative Democratic governor was Ronnie Musgrove in Mississippi, but he lost in 2003. Now it's Blanco in Louisiana, but who she appointed would be almost a forgone conclusion, basically whoever loses the Senate race between Rep. Chris John and State Treasurer John Kennedy. The winner will have Breaux's seat. Vitter is going down. (although it's too bad it won't be Mitch Landrieu, if Landrieu became VP it would be cool to have her brother take her seat)

5. On Louisiana
Do you know when the drop out date is for the Louisiana Senate election, because with For. Gov. Roemer potentially jumping into the Senate race in LA, if Mary's going to be the VP candidate, I think it'd almost be better to have Kennedy or John drop out and solidify the Democrats, avoiding a more-than-likely expensive runoff. The winner would have a good incentive to endorse Mary for the presidential candidacy and campaign with her, and hopefully would help deliver Louisiana's seven electoral votes.

Unless a deal like the one above is made, I think that Richard Ieyoub (who nearly beat Blanco in the 2003 primary), would at least be mentioned for the seat.

4. Agreed
We already have to deal with (though I'll be happy to deal with it), Kerry leaving the Senate to be president. We don't want to hinder the Democratic majority by going into the race with two losses. For anyone who wants to disagree, look at it this way:

In 2000, pundits said that Democrats would have to pull off an election night miracle to win the Senate back. Yet Democrats pulled off the defeat of Ashcroft, Grams, Gorton, Roth, and Abraham, held open seats in New Jersey, Nebraska, and New York, and picked up an open seat in Florida. That gave us 50 senators, but with Lieberman still running in Connecticut (where Rowland was governor), we were guaranteed losing the Senate. That led to entire Republican control of the government (until Jim Jeffords saved us all). The Democrats have the potential to pull off an equally impressive election landslide in 2004, so hopefully Kerry will remember this and assist in winning two branches of the government.
