Kerry VP vetter seen with Senator Evan Bayh
Kerry VP vetter Jim Johnson has been trying to stay under the radar as he moves around Capitol Hill. But on Monday, a routine fire drill found Johnson and Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh emerging from Bayh’s Senate office together in the sight of "about 2,000 people," CBS News has been told.

Bayh, a favorite of the DLC branch of the Kerry campaign, is on most people’s "A" list, although a source close to Bayh told CBS News he has not been asked (yet) for the voluminous amount of personal and financial data that other potential VP candidates have provided.

Speaking of other possibles, Kerry was surrounded on Monday by two Florida wannabes, Sens. Bob Graham and Bill Nelson. On Tuesday, Kerry is back together at fundraisers in Florida with Sen. John Edwards, a darling of the populist branch of Kerryland. The Boston Globe reports that Edwards, whom they described as an "apostle of optimism," mentioned Kerry’s name often while campaigning for Sen. Patty Murray.

"I knew John Kerry before the campaign. I know him much better now … he put his life on the line in Vietnam. He needs to be President of the United States," Edwards told the crowd in a speech that received five standing ovations.

2. I hope he doesnt pick another Senator
We need all the dem senators we've got. Other than that I frankly don't really care who he picks as long as the person will break any senate tie to match Kerry's administration's agenda.

4. Kerry campaign heed me well - NO EVAN BAYH!
One of my problems with Dean is that he was TOO chummy with Bayh (unbeknownst to most of his supporters) and considering Bayh to run with him.

I HATE Bayh and his SMARMY self.

5. Maybe you know something we don't, but
Bayh really looked good this morning asking Wolfowitz questions on Iraq.

9. I'm from Indiana -- believe me, you don't want him.
He stood right beside Bush in the Rose Garden in the run up to the war when Hoosier Republican Dick Lugar had nothing to do with it -- he's a DINO of the worst kind.

17. I agree.
He's a HORRID choice for VP. He's not as bad as Zell Miller, but he's close. If Kerry picks him for VP, I'll be re-thinking my vote.

6. *Chummy*

Did they vacation together? What specifically is *chummy*? If Kerry is considering him for VP I'd say that's a bit ... uhm, chummy wouldn't you?

Additionally, what about Bayh don't you like? I am not very familiar with him personally.

10. They were so chummy that Bayh's wife acted as Dean's first lady for events
where his wife did not attend. Bayh and Dean were close buds at the DLC and were part of the wing pulling the party to the center. Before the primaries heated up Dean was a committed "third way" centrist, remember?

14. Again, would you say considering him for VP is chummy?
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 05:48 PM by mzmolly
By the way NO ONE acted as Deans "first lady" for events. :eyes: What a foolish and sexist remark.

20. Untrue. Susan Bayh escorted Dean to official functions.
I have already stated that I am against Evan Bayh as Kerry's VP and if he chooses him because of Jim Johnson's influence it will be a horrendous mistake in my view, just as much as if Dean chose him.

8. Bayh
I don't know if it is too good of an idea. First, he is from a state we will not carry--period and I doubt he will be much help in carrying Ohio. Second, he is to the right of most Democrats in the Senate which will not be reassuring to activist democrats who already have some problems with Kerry due to his vote on the war resolution. Third, I don't see organized labor getting enthused about Bayh or minorities. Fourth, I will grant he has experience as a governor and Senator--but if this is what Kerry is looking for he would be much better off with Florida's Graham. Fifth, Another Senator on the ticket!!

21. If you can't tell the difference between Miller and Bayh
then you obviously haven't done your homework. Miller's a DINO. Bayh is a moderate Democrat from a conservative Republican state. People who spend too much time on DU easily forget that there are far more moderate Democrats out there than there are Nader/Kucinich Democrats. Far more Democrats voted for the conservative alternative to Gore in 2000 than the liberal alterantive. I wouldn't expect 2004 to be any different.

16. I Like Bayh
But I agree with some of the others. I'm not sure what he brings to the ticket. Now, if there were polling data showing Kerry carrying Indiana with Bayh on the ticket, then that is a different matter.
