Here's at least one thing Jeremiah Wright has said that's positive and unifying
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 08:34 PM by ruggerson
I'm sure there are many others, but this gives a little more context to the man.

Jeremiah Wright, a United Church of Christ pastor in Chicago, told the RCRC audience how he once had been "homophobic" but now accepts that God has created a certain number of animals in each species to be attracted to the same sex. He now asks parents to accept their children's homosexuality and to avoid the example of Saul in the Bible, who Wright believes opposed Jonathan because of a homosexual relationship with David. "Fag hags (meaning women who support homosexual causes) need to rise up and put Homo-bashers in their place," Wright concluded.

I still think, for obvious reason, that Obama needs to limit the collateral damage and fire this guy from his campaign advisory committee.

And, though I'm glad to have found that WRight has evolved over the years, his UCC congregation officially still disagrees with its own national church on same sex marriage rights. The UCC allows congregations to award themselves the designation of "open and affirming" which means that they embrace the GLBT community and endorse full equality. Rev. Wright's congregation has chosen not to designate themselves as such.

5. Usually a woman whose closest friends are all gay men... like Liz Taylor
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 08:57 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Or Madonna.

Many advantages. Less competative. The comfort of male company. And unlike female friends, if they steal your boyfriend it probably wasn't going to work out anyway.

11. I didn't take it that way
I think he's saying that in many cultures, including many AA communities, the men are more homophobic than the women. He's saying that, within families, it's often the women that can change the dynamic and make the case to men that they are wrong. A mother of a lesbian with a homophobic father, for example, needs to stand up for her gay daughter and confront the father and show him where he's wrong.

17. I don't - because he started by
using what many if not most of his female congregants would consider a slur.

BTW - It has been my personal experience that AA women are way more homophobic than males. It is understandable considering the HIV/AIDS downlow dilemma in the community.

22. well, you have a point
but I think he was trying to be hip. A lot of what this guy says is his take on current popular culture, whether we think he's a loon is another story.

20. Stand up for gays? WHAT are you talking about?
"Fag hags (meaning women who support homosexual causes) need to rise up and put Homo-bashers in their place," Wright concluded.

What kind of civil discourse is that?

You can keep him.

13. As far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on this practice of telling folks to get out
of your campaign for saying practically anything. Short of lies and intentional insults, I think there are way more constructive ways to handle these things. I don't understand why they don't explicate the problem words more; give all possible interpretations and describe what might be harmful and what is useful or good = work to increase understanding and expose harm for what it is.

He's obviously made movement in the right direction. Not enough, obviously.

And I agree, neither of our candidate's platforms goes far enough by any means.

23. I just feel neither one is going to do you any favors.
I believe both will sell you out in an instant if it helps them, and I hate seeing any of you buy into whatever either is selling. Obviously, either one will be better than what we have now, and I don't think either Clinton or Obama is ignorant of your cause, just that they see it as a voting bloc more than a real issue.

trying to look at this particular pastor as an interestingly complex human being is not mutually exclusive to realizing that both candidates are far from committed to GLBT equality.
