29. Yes, the church itself sells them.

How could a Harvard-educated lawyer not see this coming back to bite his ass?

He's gone to the Rev's church for TWENTY YEARS, calls him his mentor, has him working
as a campaign advisor.

Is he TRYING to make McCain president?

Again, was Wright speaking as a representative of the Obama campaign? Does an endorsement mean everything that comes out of his mouth a message from the Obama campaign?

and should be condemned. just like what this man says should be condemned. the fact is though, obama is very close with him, or has been. sadly this raises questions to a lot of voters.

27. Why is there so much hatred in certain segments of religion??
I see it in most of the fundamentalist sects. Why?? I am an agnostic and religion never enters my mind, yet I do not consider myself to be a bad person because I am not religious. Why can't people just live and let live?

54. Human nature. There is a lot of hatred

among atheists and agnostics, too, usually against theists.

I don't doubt that you're a good person, plenty of atheists and agnostics are. I'm a practicing Catholic and my closest friend is an atheist. In her actions, she is a better Christian than many Christians, though she stopped believing years ago. She doesn't
hate religion per se, only the hateful forms, as you do, and as I do.

Live and let live is a good policy, as long as somebody else's idea of living doesn't interfere with your rights. It's too bad it's not practiced more.

"Hate nothing at all except hatred" = Bob Dylan

63. This denomination is one of the most liberal Christian denominations in the country.
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:21 AM by intheflow
It is not a sect and has deep roots in American politics. No less than 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Congregationalists (the denomination that eventually became the United Church of Christ), including John and Samuel Adams, and John Hancock. A historically (and still predominantly) white, privileged denomination, they worked for abolition, women's rights, accessible health care and prison reform. Today the UCC church preaches fervently in favor of peace (opposing the Iraq war), working on anti-racism (deconstructing white privilege), in favor of restorative justice, in favor of economic equality, in favor of green (ecological) ideals, in favor of GLBT marriage, and in favor of a liberation theology (the idea that God gave each individual inherent worth and thus humanity is entitled to live free of tyranny). This is not a fundamentalist religion.

You're confusing an oratory style with theology; Wright's father was a Baptist minister, so his preaching style has been influenced by that evangelicalism (which is not the same as fundamentalism) and the black church experience. Please do not confuse the preaching style with the message. This man is a bona fide bleeding heart liberal. The fact that he is also Christian, black and a fiery preacher should not be held against him, imo.

Other famous UCCs:
(Current)
Howard Dean (Chair of the DNC)
James Jeffords (US Senator, Independent, one of 23 senators to vote against invading Iraq)
Andrew Young (US ambassador to the UN 1977-79, close friend of MLK)
Pat Schroeder (12 term Representative from CO, longest serving woman in the House)
...among others

(Historic)
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Thomas Edison
John Milton
Hubert Humphrey
...among others

72. Please do not judge all religion by
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 07:04 AM by musicblind
the misguided, angry, hateful few. We are not all like that. Many in religion agree with you. Religion is about finding personal comfort, structure and ways to express and experience love. Religion should never ever ever be about hate. I am openly gay, liberal as all get out, yet I am also a proud Christian. I have my own personal take on the Bible and how I interpret it. I think if you look at the New Testament verses the Old Testament and look at what Jesus himself preached, not some of the commentary that is attached to it, many Christians would find that Jesus would be shocked at the way they have twisted his ideas of love and acceptace to become hate and intolerance. A real Christian loves everyone, a real Christian would allow gay marriage, a new Christian does NOT judge because it is not his right. Many say "I don't judge them, I just hate the sin and not the sinner." No, that is not cool, you cannot hate anything and you cannot determine, imho, what the sin is because that is judge. We should love everyone, and if something is not right, that will be explained to that person later on by God. And I believe that God will be kind about that too. I believe that God is a loving God, not a hateful one.

Sorry for the random rant, lol. People who use religion for hateful purposes or to serve their own fears, discrimination, etc... those people make me very sad. Please don't think that we are all that way.

he did write about his close relationship to Wright in his first book, and I got no inkling that the guy was a looney toon. This is a political season...everything, and everyone you associate with is a picture of who you are. Maybe us atheists are always bothered a lot more by inflammatory religious types..but Wright seems to use his pulpit to "educate" the congregation. We'll see if this hurts Obama in the upcoming states. I will be pretty pissed off if this grows as an issue and we get stuck with Hillary.

64. I don't think they "gave" syphillis to black veterans.
I think the program you're referring to is where they claimed to give treatment but didn't actually treat them, so the medical scientists could chart the course of the disease if left untreated. It was totally vile, just as it was vile to allow women in factories to work with radioactive chemicals to give watches "glow in the dark" hands. Many of those women developed cancer in the neck region and died of it. By the way, at the time those women were painting on the chemicals, those who were in charge knew they were deadly carcinogens.

There are many things our government and our country's industry have done to citizens over the years, and military personnel have not been spared, either. Maybe you remember the LSD experiments the government conducted on military men.

Sorry I don't have a link for these events, the bookmark is on my former computer and I haven't transferred all my bookmarks to my new computer.

Admit it. Wright is being used to try to attack Obama because you have no legitimate beef with him. You're stretching to make an argument and if no other presidential candidate has ever been held responsible for what his pastor says why are some people trying to make Obama the first? Why is Obama being expected to answer for things never asked of other candidates?

a lot of things Ferraro said and used that to try to smear HRC, who obviously did not say
it.

The MEDIA have smeared HRC for 16 years, without being able to destroy her.

Now the media, which had been treating Obama as the heir apparent, a veritable Messiah,
have scented the blood in the water around him. They could have brought out all this stuff about his mentor/pastor earlier but they want the Dems to nominate a loser.

The media are paid to play for the GOP, always.

58. Imagine having a 4-8 year-old child with you and seeing that.

As a mom, I'd have had words with that "reverend" about his act.

Kids should be taught about sex from an early age and be taught about it in a positive
way, so they never think of it as something dirty, but that doesn't mean they should be
told all the intimate details. Something should be left for them to discover themselves.

If they saw their minister making pelvic thrusts during church, they'd want to know what
that was all about, and it sounds as if he made it look and sound dirty.

59. True! This should be interesting. The part

that amazes me is that the church sells tapes of the rev's sermons so how could Obama
ever think all this would not be seen?

69. Wright was wrong about
the government creating AIDS to kill black people. The Government actually created AIDS as a weapon, and they tested it on homosexuals in America injecting it into the Gay population through a hepatitis B vaccine. The case could be made, since it was spread in Haiti and Africa through vaccines as well, that it was also tested on black people.

This theory has been out there for awhile.

74. Who cares?! This man is not part of this campaign team.
He is a pastor of a church. Who believes everything their pastor or priest says. Give this a rest!!
