Again, *********I AGREE WITH Pastor Wright ****************
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 08:34 AM by easy_b94
His words might have been little rough for some you but he is telling the truth. Also, his statements about 911 were on point. The US government has done some crazy shit over the years to other countries. In addition, some of you people in this country are fools to think that we weren’t going to get attack some time soon. SO all of you people need to open yall eyes and see the big picture…”The United States of America Does not have a halo around it”

In a nutshell: The US is a great country but we can be so much better.

1. He manhandled his argument in terms of 9/11. But his argument about Hillary was spot on.

14. The OP was taking Wright's statements on their face.
Ignore the political implications for a moment, and examine Wright's message as it was delivered. Was it really that off-base?

Okay, now go back to the political implications: Yep, Obama's fairly screwed.

What does that say about America?

18. Which one doesn't?
I assume you're skipping over Hillary's participation in the Christian Fellowship with Sam Brownback and Rick Santorum and other Dominionists.

When you say religion, it's redundant to include "nutty."

20. No, but it's all the same.
I can see the "Swift Boat" ads already. And if our response is, "well, it's possible," we will lose. Case closed. Wake the fuck up.

Whites are just starting to consider voting for Obama, and unless we all repudiate these comments and Rev. Wright, we will have lost this election before it starts.

"Four years later he wrote that the attacks had proved that "people of color had not gone away, faded into the woodwork or just 'disappeared' as the Great White West went on its merry way of ignoring Black concerns."

8. 9/11 was a "wakeup call to the White West"?
I'm sure plenty of other racial groups died in the attacks. I'm quite sure of that.

21. The "White West" doesn't care about deaths - any deaths (remember Iraq).
It cares about money, and any sign of weakness. This was a sign of weakness - that is what the White West cares about...

9. I think the outrage over his statments is genuine...
but unjustified.

Does Black America owe our country something?

People are reacting to the rhetoric, and willfully ignoring the central message - because it's something that is uncomfortable to confront.

25. So you weren't offended...
but Joe Sixpack will be.

So now we have a battle of Anger vs. Ignorance. America is really showing it's ugly side with this issue. People who aren't personally offended, or scared to death by Rev. Wrights statements need to explain why they're not offended - it doesn't mean you have to agree with it. This goes beyond the downfall of a candidate. It rips open so many festering wounds between black and white, and raises several issues that aren't easy to confront. We can either let the blood spill, or we can take part in the healing. I think that is more important than saving/destroying Obama.

17. as an Obama supporter, I wish he'd find a new pastor. some of that guy's
stuff is true, some's true depending on who you are and what you feel, but mainstream media and mainstream America doesn't have the will or wherewithal to consider anything like this carefully or thoughtfully.

So we need a cut-and-dried solution immediately.

19. I haven't seen the videos but from what I've heard - I agree with a lot of what he's saying.
Also, I think it's about time that the U.S. had a Black Preacher in the limelight instead of the likes of Robertson. African American churches are an important part of our culture, whether some folks know it or not. African slaves were brought to this continent in chains by the ancestors of our current Establishment. Under extreme duress they formed a religious culture that has endured for centuries.

Most white people don't have the vaguest idea what is said in thousands of black churches across the U.S. on Sunday mornings. I'm Anglo, but I've been privileged to hear from time to time. People think that Jesse Jackson is radical - he was toning it down for his white audience!

To all the handwringers out there I say - grow up! This is part of the United States! This is our culture - all of ours.

28. Most White People
You are right, most white people had no idea about this venom spewed on Sunday morning from "some" churches, but the light has been shined and this venom has been exposed. Shame should come to anyone who casts disparaging remarks on any race. As long as this type of bs continues, will we ever move forward and truly get along?

23. What is it with you guys?
Are you that politically tone deaf? People here were jumping up and down screaming that Michele Obama was right to never have been proud of America. Do you really think that's a winning campaign slogan?

Do you think "God Damn America" will look good on a bumpersticker, and attract voters?

Come on... it has little to do with whether or not you can justify the sentiments. It has to do with the fact that intemperate rhetoric like that turns people off.

35. Obama answering questions re Wright on Thursday
from this OP
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5072859

This is from a Telephone Q&A with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review on Thursday

Q: I don't know if you've seen it, but it's all over the wire today (from an ABC News story), a statement that your pastor (the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side) made in a sermon in 2003 that instead of singing "God Bless America," black people should sing a song essentially saying "God Damn America."

A: I haven't seen the line. This is a pastor who is on the brink of retirement who in the past has made some controversial statements. I profoundly disagree with some of these statements.
Q: What about this particular statement?

A: Obviously, I disagree with that. Here is what happens when you just cherry-pick statements from a guy who had a 40-year career as a pastor. There are times when people say things that are just wrong. But I think it's important to judge me on what I've said in the past and what I believe.

The veracity of the pastors comments notwithstanding.

I don't care if the pastor has a relevant point or not. Joe six pack isint going to cast his vote for the "God Damn America" guy.

He wont.

39. Doesn't Joe Six Pack say that God didn't protect us from 9/11 because of gays and feminists?
I mean they used this argument a long time ago. God let 9/11 happen because of abortionists, homosexuals and feminists. Joe six pack wasn't hopping mad back then, and secretly agreed (sometimes not so secretly). God does Damn America for this or that.

I just don't see this as anything special. Fiery rhetoric from a white evangelical or a black evangelical blaming 9/11 on America's actions.

There's nothing to see here, please disperse.

David
