The following is Emmanuel Kant’s answer to the question, what is enlightenment: “Enlightenment is man's release from his self-incurred tutelage. Tutelage is man's inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another. Self-incurred is this tutelage when its cause lies not in lack of reason but in lack of resolution and courage to use it without direction from another. Sapere aude! "Have courage to use your own reason!"- that is the motto of enlightenment. ”

In a resent letter to the editor, the writer asks undecided voters to do some thinking about the candidates before voting. He then, for the convenience of the undecided, repeats the themes from Bush’s anti Kerry attack ads.

Now if the letter writer lets Bush’s campaign committee to do his thinking for him, then according to Kant, he isn’t an enlightened person.

Enlightened voters will not only listen to the ads, but will also find out if they are truthful or not. Obviously, from his letter’s content, that is something the above mentioned writer hasn’t done.

Seriously. Is this in reply to the LTTE that was in the WV paper? Do you want to one-up the original writer or try to persuade among your mutual audience? Write for your audience.
