WATCH VIDEO: John Hagee Says Adolf Hitler and Catholic Church Conspired During Holocaust
This is how you go back against what's said about a Democrat...you attack the Republicans, not each other! This guy is despised and loathes by Catholics and likens the Catholic Church to the 'Great Whore' of the Bible. He also calls it a false cult system and says they conspired with the Nazis to help exterminate the Jews during the Holocaust. Watch the video below...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4qNi7tPanUA">John Hagee anti-Catholic hatred

In his book Jerusalem Countdown..."Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews." - John Hagee

"Katrina Disaster was God's punishment for gay sin." John Hagee, Sept. 18, 2006

I'm beginning to question whether some members of this board are really even Democrats. There is a willingness to write-off the inflammatory remarks of the Far-Right, but when it comes to Obama...everyone wants to jump on him. I'm especially shocked to see Democrats do this to each other. This is the first real swiftboating attempt of Obama, and what the fuck does half of DU do? Willingly cave in to it, instead of fighting it back with something like this. It doesn't mean ignoring the reality of Wright's comments, but it does mean standing up for the Party in the face of a blatant right-wing attempt to swiftboat his campaign. This Wright story comes from the very bowels of FAUX News. Once again they are attempting to mess around with our primary, and this is how we all react to it. If DU was a real life room, half of us would be dead already because we'd have slit each other's throats over this bullshit.

When the Catholic community was up in arms over Hagee's support of McCain...and McCain knowingly seeking his support...he quickly came out and repudiated his comments and distanced himself from it. That's all Obama needs to do which I'm sure he will before the day is over.

1. I think DUers will have a hard time condemning this one
Just try finding a thread about the Catholic Church on here (outside the Catholic and Orthodox DU Group) that doesn't contain the phrase "Nazi Pope" at least once.

Obama as if he said what Wright did? Can you say "double-standard?"

5. To be sure, Hagee's words are offensive, and inaccurate...
when it comes to the official position of the Catholic Church during the Holocaust. Pope Pius XII, for a long time was asked to intervene on behalf of the Jewish people suffering under Hitler's pogrom, but refused on the grounds of "neutrality." He did, I understand, hide some Jews toward the end of the Holocaust, but he did not do much to stop Hitler.

Hitler also had the encouragement of several Christian theologians who blamed the Jews for the crucifixion of Jesus. Kittel, a theologian whose works are still used today in seminaries and pulpits all over the world, was one who agreed with Hitler's pogrom against the Jews. Althaus was another. Many Christian ministers in the US, when Hitler first came to power, were very complimentary of Hitler because of his emphasis on "morality" (as fundamentalists define the term.) Hitler, himself, on many occasions used his own faith (Hitler was Catholic---a deluded Catholic, but a Catholic nonetheless) as justification for his oppression and killing of Jews.

But, to use the positions of a few within the Catholic church to totally distort the church's position during Hitler's time, and to demonize the church is beyond the pale. Hagee doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

And, you rightly point out that equating Obama's views with that of his pastor, is as wrong as equating the Catholic Church with Hitler simply because Hitler was Catholic.

14. It's true about the Church and the Nazis
And, before you start, I am a HUGE defender of the Church on here, but not it's "upper management."

His Holiness knew about the Holocaust and turned more than a blind eye to it. I'm convinced a word or two from him and -- at the very least -- exterminations would have stopped, including those of the mentally handicapped.

Hitler indeed courted the Church and they went along with him until he showed himself for who he really was. They did not conspire with Hitler, it's bullshit. This is the same kind of crap that has been spewed by RW preachers for years in an attempt to put down Catholicism. I would hope DUer's would be able to see through this.

57. Having been raised Catholic, this particular point is hardly controversial...
at least from my perspective. Hagee is an ass and anti-Catholic bigot, that's not the dispute, but even a broken clock is right at least twice a day. He may be exaggerating the actual participation of the Church, but the fact that the Church capitulated to Hitler's demands isn't really in dispute. In addition, certain organizations within the Church also actively participated in the Holocaust, that's also not in dispute.

I don't view this as comparable to Wright, mostly because Wright is NOT in the same league as Hagee, Hagee is an out and out bigot against Catholics, I see little in Wright's sermons that is objectionable to anyone, most of it is the truth. My only point of contention is his opinion on the HIV virus, but that's mostly just some justified paranoia overriding common sense.
