SNIP..."TALLAHASSEE -- Sen. John Kerry and Gov. Jeb Bush became embroiled in a political brouhaha Wednesday after a student newspaper reported the Democratic presidential hopeful favors drilling for oil off the Florida coast.

With a copy of a the Independent Florida Alligator in hand, President Bush's brother said he was outraged at Kerry's reported position, saying it shows he has failed to follow efforts by the federal and state government to block drilling to avoid potential environmental damage.

Kerry discussed offshore drilling while campaigning Tuesday in Tampa and his speech was reported by the student-run newspaper that covers the University of Florida. His campaign said the Alligator made "an honest mistake" in reporting the candidate's stand and that Bush seized the opportunity "to distort John Kerry's record and scare Florida voters.....""

Here is the apology from the independent student newspaper. This is good they apologized.

SNIP..."CORRECTION
Sen. John Kerry does not support drilling for oil off the coast of Florida. Because of ambiguous language at a speech Kerry gave in Tampa on Tuesday, the Alligator reported otherwise. Following is a statement from Kerry spokesman Mark Kornblau:
“John Kerry has consistently opposed drilling off the Florida coast. He opposes it today and will oppose it as President.” “John Kerry only supports drilling in the Western Gulf, off the coast of other states, where it is already taking place with the support of Democrats and Republicans alike.”

1. The Alligator is usually better than just a "student" paper...
...alot of talented people work there and have worked there...me and Carl Hiassen, for example. (He said modestly)

3. Is it connected to UF? It does not make it clear.
I was not familiar with it. Sounds like good folks working there, though. Loved Hiassen's Sick Puppy.

It was a strange apology.

5. It used to be connected to UF until about 1972 or 1974...
...when it got kicked off campus for providing information on birth controll and family planning. Since then, it has been The Independant Florida Alligator.

2. The apology is almost as bad as the mistake
I see a little dig with the "because of ambiguous language at a speech Kerry gave".

Then again, what kind of construction is 'at a speech'?

They need to apologize again!

4. I think you are right.
I did not read it that carefully at first. It is a little dig.

6. Yeah, I have to agree...
...I skimmed it a little too quickly as well..."language at a speech" is clumsy enough without blaming Kerry for confusing the poor reporter. Oh well...

8. "Because of ambiguous language at a speech Kerry gave"
How about "because of a stupid college reporter who could not understand words like, 'offshore drilling is wrong' or 'we have to have energy independence'"
