Anybody ELSE think there's a possibility that the Obama camp put the Wright tapes out there now? |
|
A. We had heard rumblings about Obama's pastor for months now. Heck, Hannity has been talking about it non-stop since Super Tuesday.
B. The church makes Wright's sermons available for sale just a few days ago (from what I read), and Fox and ABCNews swooped in and bought them up. Why did the church do it now?
C. Obama's people KNOW that the Wright stuff is going to come out sooner or later, so they have to figure out WHEN is the best time for this to happen.
So... given the above.... what *IS* the answer to C?
Would a time like THIS fit the bill?
1. There is no actual voting of any kind occuring for almost 6 weeks.
2. Right before a weekend in which March Madness Selection Sunday is going to occur. A large part of the country, especially Obama's base of young people and men, will spend the next several weeks worrying more about their brackets than about the election.
3. Far enough away from November (and even convention time in August) that, by the time we get there, this will be an OLD story that nobody is paying attention to.
We Obama folks have been blaming the media, Hillary, the GOP, and everyone else. But maybe OUR OWN TEAM put this out now, to preempt it being put out by OTHERS at a more inopportune time.
The key to good politics is to get your bad stuff out there at a time when it will do the LEAST damage. If this came out 3 or 4 days before PA voted... it would be very bad. If it came out a week before the convention... it would be VERY VERY bad. If it came out a week before the GE, it would be VERY VERY VERY VERY bad.
Think about this... would Bush have been better served if his DUI would've come out 8 months before the 2000 election instead of 3 days? Bush was up 4 or 5 points in the polls over Gore on the Friday before the election when the DUI story broke. His response was weak and lame and is as much responsible for Gore moving ahead in the popular vote (and really, he should have won if FL wasn't so crooked).
Obama's campaign is run by smart people. They saw where Hannity (and some others) were going with this over the past several weeks.... and by getting it *ALL* out there now, they might just be doing a VERY smart thing.
Just a thought....

1. I don't know about that |
|
But I'd rather be talking about this in March than in October.

3. I was ready to put on my tinfoil hat when I saw your subject line. Now, though.... |

Interesting. A significant part of campaigning is damage control, and pre-emptive damage control is usually best.

5. Very interesting ... this IS a good time for it to come out |
|
We have time to deal with it -- a couple of debates before Pennsylvania when he'll no doubt be asked about it. This is part of the vetting process and, based on his past behavior, I have no doubt that Obama will figure out a way to deal with it (effectively).
Reminding people that OPRAH goes to this same church (or did until fairly recently) is a good start, as well as pointing out other prominent Americans who attend UCC churches. Jeremiah Wright was toward the end of his tenure at Trinity when he gave these sermons (within 5 years of retirement), and perhaps he was just letting his hair down completely before going off into the sunset. My father was a UCC minister and I noticed his preaching became much more honest and "let it rip" toward the end ... Maybe it's something in the kind of man who becomes a minister that they have passionate beliefs, which they often have to downplay in order to keep their congregations happy. One last salvo of truth perhaps before they lose that "bully pulpit". I cut the guy some slack, and I think Obama will be able to adequately distance himself and deal with this.

6. I thought Wright was selling the tapes on the internet |
|
it's not hard to believe that somebody at a news organization got them themselves.

7. I've been thinking that this isn't a bad time. This is a huge lull. Compare it to |
|
it dropping two or three days before Pennsylvania or, two weeks later, right before North Carolina and Indiana, OR in October.
I'm already feeling a bit inoculated. It just isn't having the nervous effect on me it did yesterday. People freaking out about it made me expect even worse.
It isn't Obama saying it which is what some people are practically saying. He "profoundly disagrees" with it.
We will see.
