Saying that Obama is tainted by his relationship with Wright is like saying...
...

1. All Catholics who knew and admired a priest who turned out to be a child moleter are also child molesters.

2. All male members of the New Life Church who had a close relationship with Ted Haggard are also closet gays and cheating on their spouses with gay prostitutes.

3. All Jews who had a close relationship with Rabbi Fred Neulander are also thinking about hiring someone to beat their spouses to death.

GMAFB....OK? :eyes:

Painting Obama as some radical, Jew-hating, Farrakan supporter, etc., because of Wright is just as stupid as the shit I posted above.

3. Exactly!
I have had a close relationship with an older couple when I was growing up and they were RW nutcakes and Reagan lovers. But...they were elegant, well-educated people and I just loved them and over looked this. So...that is something to hold against me? I even went to some creepy Pubbie meetings with them and kept my mouth shut because I did not want to hurt their feelings.

46. To me, it makes perfect sense ...
Obama is being berated by many here because of remarks made by "the man who officiated at his marriage, and who baptized his children." Many are saying that makes him inextricably entwined with this pastor's every word and every action - forever.

Since when is anyone responsible for the lifetime words and actions of the priest, minister, or rabbi who officiated at their wedding, or the baptism or bar/bat mitzvah of their children?

Are you saying that no Catholic had a close relationship with a mentor priest who turned out to be a molester; that disgraced marital cheater Ted Haggard never mentored anyone; or that convicted wife-murdered Rabbi Neulander never had close students he taught?

IMO, you need to get out more. I would suggest that you do that by first removing your head from your ass.

He denounces what Wright is saying now, but hasn't quit the church itself because this person is retiring anyway.

Obama did NOT "embrace and approve" of the message from Wright. He has publically said so. How in the hell did you miss that? Selective perception possibly?

Ever hear the old saying, 'Actions speak louder than words'? hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

I'd have to say that 20 YEARS of personal affiliation and support pretty clearly PROVE that Obama "embraced and approved" of the message.

BTW ... Non-smoker here. Keep your cigar to celebrate the McCain Presidency if Obama is the Dem candidate.

thousands of parishoners who have attended any church of which Wright was a pastor during the past 40 years and means that they also are not "qualified" to run for public office.

whereas Obama's preacher shouted it from the pulpit every Sunday...apples and ummm, artichokes...or something like that...

This is a problem to white america...because Obama does not appear to have the Afro-centric views that the rest of his church has...

He will need to come out and say something more substantial to stop this...

And, yes, I'm an Obama supporter...I've known about Wright for a while...and I still support him, I just think that this is something that he will need to address...

Being right is the consolation prize in politics, and we trade away electoral success for that consolation prize again and again.

Obama is not tainted by this, but his political fortunes are tainted by this. It is irrelvant that this shouldn't be the case.

Come November, we get to be right again. Power stays with the opposition.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 04:58 PM by Drachasor
his minister rarely gives an anti-abortion speech.

It's like saying that an evangelical businessman can't go to his Church if rarely his preacher gives a speech about how greed and the rich are destroying America. Mostly however, he says good and true things.

In short, it is saying that if your priest/minister/etc EVER says something outrageous to your personal beliefs, you should drop him and abandon your Church. Mostly, however, he says good and true things.

It is also like saying if you have an adviser and mentor in college whom you respect, you aren't allowed to respect them if they have ANY radical or wrong beliefs.

It is demanding perfection not only from a politician, but everyone he respects, admires, or likes, even if he almost always gives good advice and is a source of wisdom. This is a ludicrous standard.

the male members knew what Haggard was up to
the Jews knew that the Rabbi in question had hired someone to beat his wife to death

Your post is just about the most poorly reasoned thing I've read here on DU in quite some time; frankly I'm surprised at some of the people who have complimented it.

--------------

I think you're also setting up a strawman here - most of the remarks I've seen on the Wright situation are expressing concern over how this will be percieved by the American public - and whether or not it will have an effect on Obama's chances in the general election - there's not a lot of people "painting Obama as some radical, Jew-hating, Farrakan supporter". That's kind of over the top outrage, I think. Not that that's unusual for you....
