I guess I'll never be able to run for public office.
You see, my grandparents are socialists. Which is a move to the right for them since both of their fathers were communists. And while I disagree with them, politically, I still consort with them several times a year for Passover, High Holy days, family occasions. I even invited them to my wedding, where there are photographs of me actually dancing with my grandfather. Talk about damning!

If that’s not bad enough, my mother is a life long agitator. The first time I was tear-gassed (but not her first time, alas) was in 1972 at a protest of the firebombing of Cambodia. Never mind that I was 11 months old, I was there and have continued to have a relationship with the woman who brought me for the past 35 years. In fact, I’m afraid she was at my wedding too.

On a slightly less serious, but no less sensational note, my brother was arrested for DUI about 10 years ago and actually served a little time, yet is a frequent guest in my home and even interacts with my children sometimes. (He was 19, and hasn’t been in trouble with the law since, but does that really matter?)

And the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, my be my stepfather. He’s black, and, for some reason, was furious that his nephews took an additional “driver’s ed” class for young black men on how to avoid being shot by police during a routine traffic stop. Man needs to chill!

Or maybe there’s the fact that my husband of 15 years smoked pot in college, and I knew about it, and still chose to marry him. Raises serious concerns about my judgment, I guess.

So you’ll never see me in public life – way too much baggage.

1. It's better to get this out now, before you secure the nomination.
FOX is going to have a field day with you.

You should probably denounce all those people and withdraw in shame.

3. I could never run for public office.
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 05:40 PM by lizzy
For one, I am an atheist. I never go to church. Also, I wasn't born in US. I am disqualified by that alone.
So freaking what?
Do you think you are alone?
There are plenty of people who could not run for public office.
Or are you saying everyone should be able to run for public office?

4. I know i can't
I lived in an offshore jurisdiction for three years.

I didn't come out ahead financially because of it - high rents ate up any tax savings that I made...

By I'm now tainted for life.

If you want to be elected into high office - it requires careful life planning unfortunately.

8. OMG - I read "Mein Kampf" about 15 years ago!
But somehow fascism doesn't seem to get the American Nazis as stirred up as does the threat of the "godless commies."

Except Jonah Goldberg's RIDICULOUSLY titled screed, "Liberal Fascism."

11. Shoot - I read Mein Kampf too!
After reading "The rise and fall of the third reich", I followed the author's advice and read Mein Kampf - he thought that we all should get to know and recognize the signs of fascism, but I realize now how dumb that was.

Ugh - I'm screwn.

13. I haven't read Mein Kampf
but I did take a poli sci class in college once in which I was required to read The Communist Manifesto, along with a shitload of other books.

I'm screwn too.

Can I hear a nomination?

12. Most of us could never run for public office
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 06:00 PM by goodgd_yall
If I had planned on running for political office, my life would be SO different. There's PLENTY in my life that would cause scandal among the electorate, yet at the same time, my life is pretty tame compared to some of my friends.

16. Some say so
I'm certainly not a wild-eyed radical, although I did have more radical thoughts when I was younger. I'd have to have a pretty stodgy life to be considered "electable."
