Will Pastorgate be behind us after Obama's media blitz tonight?
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 06:23 PM by Unsane
Yea or nay?

If nay, I grow more despondent about his electoral chances. Can Hillary use this to woo SDs? What will happen? Holy shiat.

1. It will be gone for the time being.
It will always be a spectre on his campaign, but after tonight it won't be much of a talking point. It's the surprise bomb in these situations that creates the stir, not the actual issue. After he's been on all of the TV shows and diffused the issue, he'll be OK.

9. Is that what Obama is saying right now?
I was never present for one of those rants? He'd be better off not including that message.

6. Obama is about to neuter it completely.
Obama will take the high road and speak of faith and God and his hopes for the country.

They will question him hard on Wright but he will clarify his position, his belief and bring it back to the uplifting meaning behind his faith.

He will come out of this very strong. And the Dem leaders will see once again, this man knows how to handle a crisis.

10. Exactly...
I appreciate your optimism and NOT kicking into a panic mode like a few have already.

Everything will be cool - Obama's integrity speaks for itself and I am very confident this will be ancient history by a week from now.

18. I knew last night
That Obama could (and likely would) turn this episode into a real explanation and examination about his deep faith and commitment to the church.

This gives him a chance to underline that he is devoutly religious and bases his convictions of love, peace and unity on that faith.

It will be very, very hard to argue against that message.

35. I posted early this morning what he would need to do.
I missed on a couple of points, but he has taken most of what I considered the necessary steps.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5072445

Actually, he went my 'press conference' one better by arranging to make the cable news rounds tonight - his advisors are obviously smarter than I am. :D

And I am hoping that this will lead to a larger discussion on race relations in this country. After what has happened in the past few days, it's obvious that we desperately need to have that discussion.

7. Well it will never completely go away. But it won't be as big of an issue.
The only thing I worry about is 527's. We need a good strong counter 527 to combat it. Just have faith.

8. Honestly? I Think Obama Will Do His Part. But That's Irrelevant. It'll All Be Up To The Media.
Obama is likely to do a great job tonight. If it satisfies the media for now, it should go away for the most part. But if the media decides it's something that has legs that have yet to truly grow and decide to keep up with it, then he's done. We're just gonna have to see how the next few days go.

11. IMO, we need to examine Hillary's membership in "The Fellowship" headed by Doug Coe.
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 06:31 PM by cryingshame
I can't start that thread til later tonight.

She's been praying with a group of rightwing extremists who want to wage war for Christ.

That is only doing the job of the Republicans for them.

I predict this dust up will ultimately work in Obama's favor. Just watch.

31. unlike Wright, who is essentially harmless, Doug Coe is an extremist working against our Constition.
Hillary's praying with these people on a weekly basis for YEARS, is messed up.

It's not just the leadership (Doug Coe), it's the Fellowship (Far right extremists) and the Mission (waging war for Christ).

Obama's church and it's members are mainstream. His pastor spoke in very raw, politically incorrect terms. But his core meaning was sound.

13. No it certainly will not go away -- it cuts to fitness as Commander in Chief
These two statements together show it's over for Obama.

"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation.

Obama:"I don't think my church is actually particularly controversial."

25. The pastor does not represent the church?
He is the voice of the church. Obama not only gave tacit approval of Wright for twenty years, he remained silent while America has been disparaged.

He cannot defend America -- he cannot be President. Period.

17. The media doesn't reflect too long on any one scandal
before it moves on. Unless there is another shoe to drop.

The problem with this one is it's on video, thus all over the web and probably in endless email to tens of millions of people over the next few weeks/months.

Btw, I think you have reacted to this honestly and without the kneejerk defensive reactions of some. You saw that it was not a good thing and were not so partisan that you immediately got furious and blamed it on Hillary, Hillary supporters, etc.

If something of equal import happens to Hillary, I hope her supporters, including myself, have the good sense to react much like you did.

It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The media is about entertainment, and you can only play off this story for so long. It isn't like an ongoing trial.

There has been lots of worst scandals out there and they pass with time and people move on.

32. The term is Hillary supporters and if you bother to read some of
the threads on this board today, you will find that there were several Hillary supporters today who were just as upset about this development as Obama supporters, sometimes even more so. We realize that Obama has a chance to be the Democratic nominee and that anything that damages him also damages us and the Democratic party. We think that having a Democratic President elected in November is much more important than the petty arguments and name calling that have consumed this forum for the past few weeks.

26. Oh and Obama has the Teflon that Bill Clinton had when he ran
Bill had affair after affair come out and he still kept right on going. The Republicans could not stand that. The Hillary supporters can't stand it now. They throw everything that got at Barack and he still comes out standing tall. They threw the kitchen sink at him. He dropped temporarily in the polls and now he is back on top. So enjoy your day or two Hillbots. It will be over soon and Obama will still be standing tall....
