Senator Nelson of Fla
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 08:22 PM by salonghorn70
Anyone surprised that there isn't more talk of him for VP. I know that there is some but he really isn't on anyone's short list. Maybe he will be the surprise choice.:)

1. I've thought of this myself...
...here in FL, he is almost as popular as Graham when it comes to crossing party lines...as Insurance Commissioner, he saved alot of people alot of money...he is also a Space Shuttle "vet" (which may not really mean much, but is great for commercials)...Bill Nelson, however is about 5'6"and might look a little odd standing next to JK. (buy why quibble?)

7. Nelson WAS a great guy, but,
his voting record in the last few years is questionable.

Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 05:28 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I stood next to him at a Gore rally in Orlando in 10/00....

He's about 5'10

If you want a running mate the same height as Kerry you better go to the NBA draft....

17. Bill Bradley?
Why go to the NBA draft when there's an ex NBA'er available?

2. Hope not - we need him in the Senate. We are already losing Graham
and the race to replace him will be close.

He speaks like a Shakespearean actor...

He was born in Florida so I wonder where it came from.....

He also was a Navy or Marine captain....

Nice difference from Dick (Six Deferments) Cheney....

5. Jeb Bush is governor of Florida
If Nelson is elected Vice President, we would lose a senate seat. Plus, we may lose Kerry's senate seat. The democrats can't afford to lose 2 senate seats if Kerry wants to get anything done as President.

Maybe that is the main reason we are not hearing more about him.

9. there was some talk shortly after super tuesday
when kerry first appeared with both graham and nelson. but it wasn't much. i guess it's something most democrats and kerry himself doesn't really want to do unless he feels it's the best move since that asshole jeb would be able to appoint his replacement to the senate.

18. What about the asshole Romney appointing Kerry's replacement?
Kerry should have announced his intentions to resign from the Senate the day he launched his campaign. If he had lost the primaries, I doubt the Mass Dems would have had a problem with his return. Now it's too late and even if Kerry wins, Shit Romney will appoint a right wing neocon shitbag fascist to replace him.

19. if kerry is elected president, it's all worth it
and i'm not ruling out bill nelson and neither should kerry. if bill nelson seems like the best choice, kerry should pick him. but i'm saying unless they find someone just as good or better it might come into consideration. i don't think kerry should pick nelson or graham anyways since the reason will mostly be to help win florida and with jeb bush as governor even if kerry wins it's likely to be stolen as last time so we should not be too dependent on that state.

and massachusettes democrats are trying to pass a bill allowing for election of new senator if kerry is elected president rather than appointment by romney. and if romney appoints a right winger he will never be elected governor again. although even without that it's likely romney wont be elected again unless democrats run a bad candidate like they did last time which is the only reason romney won. if robert reich had won the primary he would have beat romney.

12. Nelson's being gossiped about for veep --
Washington Times, re. CNN report:

Veep news

"A couple of rumors" concerning John Kerry's vice presidential search "have reached the stage of being reportable," CNN political editor John Mercurio writes in the Morning Grind column at www.cnn.com.
"First, sources say Kerry has told friends that his personal choice, all other things being equal, is Dick Gephardt. 'He's worked with him the most . He personally likes him the best. He trusts him the most, and he likes Jane and the kids. He's most comfortable putting him on the ticket,' one non-Gephardt source told the Grind.
"Of course, all other things are anything but equal in this process. Gephardt ran a disappointing prez campaign and has plenty of detractors — even, sources say, within Kerry's inner circle.
"One other thing: We're hearing that Florida Sen. Bob Graham will not make it onto Kerry's short list. Graham, who at 68 would be the fourth-oldest VP ever upon taking office, has met with Johnson, but is not expected to advance to the vetting process," Mr. Mercurio said.
"But Kerry's not ignoring Florida Dems completely. Sen. Bill Nelson, a good friend of Shrum's, still may make the list."

Maybe he can be Speaker of the House until 2011 or so when he kicks off his presidential bid again.

14. Nelson's connections to the so-called "Fellowship" bother me.
I found this email I sent to someone on May 11, 2003:

On the Guy James thread today there was a discussion about Senator Bill
Nelson of Florida. Prolesunited posted this link which I am still reading
and printing and yelling "OMG" about.
http://www.harpers.org/online/jesus_plus_nothing/?pg=1

Also I was doing a search for an article I saw with a white house guest list
with a Bill Nelson, which I can't find.

BUT I found this. I had seen the articles about this, but I did not notice
Nelson's name. He and his wife are mentioned about halfway down.
http://www.portlandphoenix.com/features/top/ts_multi/documents/02877355.asp

SNIP:......"Members, who carry no cards and are very loosely defined, are
required to keep quiet about their activities. But publicly available
documents reveal that the Fellowship Foundation — a central legal entity,
but far from the only one involved with the group — has an
$11-million-a-year budget and a board of directors including Grace Nelson,
wife of Florida’s Democratic US Senator Bill Nelson. Its president is
Richard Carver, Air Force assistant secretary under President Reagan. Its
rich backers include Jerome Lewis, a Denver oilman; Republican contributor
Michael Timmis; and Paul Temple, a Maryland investor. Among members, Getter
writes, are congressmen who are in charge of the State Department and
foreign-aid budgets......"

This confirms my doubts about Senator Nelson's desire to serve his
constituents. He is the one who had 2700 calls anti-war and still voted for
it. His office said he had to listen to the ones who did not call."

I am not against religion, but I against this bunch and their brand of
theocracy. I am upset my senator is a part of it.
