*** Wright leaves African American Religious Leadership Committee ****
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 06:50 PM by FLDem5
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/Wright_leaves_Obama_campaign.html

Spokesman Tommy Vietor emails:

"Rev. Wright is no longer serving on the African American Religious Leadership Committee."

That cuts Wright's only formal tie to Obama, and answers what was sure to be a question in Obama's interviews tonight: If Geraldine Ferraro had to leave the Clinton campaign, why is Wright different.

(I used **** so you would know how official this is.)

1. you beat me to it
I wonder if anyone cares about Hillary religous ties

Clinton's prayer group was part of the Fellowship (or "the Family"), a network of sex-segregated cells of political, business, and military leaders dedicated to "spiritual war" on behalf of Christ, many of them recruited at the Fellowship's only public event, the annual National Prayer Breakfast. (Aside from the breakfast, the group has "made a fetish of being invisible," former Republican Senator William Armstrong has said.) The Fellowship believes that the elite win power by the will of God, who uses them for his purposes. Its mission is to help the powerful understand their role in God's plan.

With Santorum, Clinton co-sponsored the Workplace Religious Freedom Act; she didn't back off even after Republican senators such as Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter pulled their names from the bill citing concerns that the measure would protect those refusing to perform key aspects of their jobs—say, pharmacists who won't fill birth control prescriptions, or police officers who won't guard abortion clinics

Liberal rabbi Michael Lerner, whose "politics of meaning" Clinton made famous in a speech early in her White House tenure, sees the senator's ambivalence as both more and less than calculated opportunism. He believes she has genuine sympathy for liberal causes—rights for women, gays, immigrants—but often will not follow through. "There is something in her that pushes her toward caring about others, as long as there's no price to pay. But in politics, there is a price to pay."

A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation," says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. "I don't....there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer."

25. please change your thread title. Wright was never part of Obama's campaign. The AARCL
is NOT part of Obama's campaign.

Is the Rev. Wright a part of this campaign?

No. The confusion here, that Obama's opponents and the media make such to-do about, arises from the AARLC. A year ago Obama helped set up the African American Religious Leadership Committee. Wright is a member. This is an independent think-tank that occasionally acts advisory to the Obama campaign. It is not a part of the Campaign, and Obmama has no direct authority over it. It's intenty was to establish a central forum for exploring shared oncerns specific to African American churches of various denominations; the advisory capacity would then make it possible for Obama to draw on the Committee's experience and form a policy on such concerns in an incluisive manner. However, the committee was never intended to be, nor is it, 'part' of the campaign, since it does not exist to raise monies or votes or endorsement

40. Ask him
“There is a concrete, real black power that I believe in. I don’t believe in black separatism, I don’t believe in black power that would have racist overtones, but certainly if black power means the amassing of political and economic power in order to gain our just and legitimate goals, then we all believe in that. And I think that all white people of good will believe in that.”

and haven't been able to guess what's coming out of the minds of Penn and Ickes next. But I think the kitchen sink is almost empty, so who knows? Maybe we're going back to his high school English teacher, or a neighbor of a cousin who saw him take a piece of bubble gum when he was ten.

15. Good move on his part -- Obama doesn't have to "do the deed"
and the effect is the same. I'm sure Wright's heart is in the right
place but Obama doesn't need his name on the letterhead right now.

Has Obama "fired" him as his mentor? The joke is on the voters...Let's see his "recommendations" to his protege in the Oval Office (if Obama miraculously survives being swiftboated by the rethugs on this in the fall.). :scared:

yeah, i know this stuff matters, but it's just all out of proportion.

it would matter if a candidate really shared those views or would try to implement them. does anyone think that? oh, probably 13% i guess. :eyes:

I predicted that like with Ferraro, he'd quit out of the goodness of his heart rather than get fired, and do so within a few days. He did it within a few hours.

Obama is to be on Countdown, and Anderson Cooper, AND Hannity and Colmes tonight? Maybe now he'll be free to talk about some real issues.

Until they close every bastion of liberalism down in the name of a few delegates. No thank you Hillary I do not want your version of America where people of different opinions cannot express themselves for fear that one day a friend or acquaintance will be painted with the brush of their words.

Controversial minister leaves Obama campaign
Former pastor of Chicago church again creates headache for Democrat

Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign announced Friday that his former pastor had left the campaign’s spiritual advisory committee after the pastor’s inflammatory sermons ignited fierce debate in news accounts and political blogs.

The campaign said the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., who Obama has said brought him to Christianity, was “no longer serving” on Obama’s African American Religious Leadership Committee, a loose group of supporters associated with the campaign, NBC’s Mark Murray reported.
