Sorry, Hillary: You've crossed the line

By Charles Pluckhahn

Special to The Times

Hillary Clinton, you sure don't make it easy.

Since 2005, I've written $7,100 worth of checks to the person I considered most qualified to be the junior senator from New York and, later, president of the United States. In February, I was elected a Clinton delegate in the neighborhood-level caucuses, and looked forward to trying to be appointed a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

snip//

Sen. Clinton, I can no longer count myself in your ranks. I've decided that, barring some stunning revelation, Barack Obama has earned the Democratic nomination, fair and square. More importantly, I've decided that your campaign's tactics have crossed a line that should never be crossed. I no longer want to be associated with your effort to become the Democratic nominee.

One of your surrogates, Geraldine Ferraro, has said that Obama wouldn't be where he is in the Democratic contest if he were white. When combined with your rejection of Obama's qualifications to be commander in chief, and your husband's disrespect for Obama's effort, I see an ugly undercurrent.

I grew up in white Milwaukee, which was very white indeed. But most of my heroes were black: Martin Luther King Jr., Hank Aaron, Bill Cosby, Ralph Ellison, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. When a kid, the sight of black people being mowed down with water hoses in Alabama made a Democrat out of me before I knew what a Democrat was.

Woe betide the politician, and especially the Democratic politician, who makes a racist appeal, no matter how artfully they think they've constructed it. When George Bush's campaign did it to Michael Dukakis in 1988, I expected it. That's what Republicans do.

When your campaign race-baits and disrespects Barack Obama in 2008, you can count me out. Democrats don't do that. We are better.

9. OTOH..
One of CNN’s pundits (a Dem) says he spoke to a GOP strategist who claims the Swiftboat ads (against Kerry) will look like Public Service ads next to what they’ve got to hit Obama with in the GE. Don’t think it takes a genius to figure out they’ll be running a lot of church video.

I mean. Better we behave like a pack of knuckle-dragging racists now rather than let the Republicans have all the fun.

Am I right?

25. The tired old logic...
That we should stoop to race-baiting in the Primaries because that's what the Republicans will do in the General Election. There's a reason that I'm a Democrat -- because we don't behave that way.

44. So Hillary won't have them going negative?
Is that your point?

I am so over the sexual misbehavior of her husband. Do you think they won't drag that up again?

And what about Vince Foster, Whitewater, Rose Law Firm, her previous failures with health care, the sexual innuendo about her and him?

Failure to release her tax returns?

Flip flopping on the war, the primary rules,.....

Please, if that is the reason to vote for her - fear of them going negative.

I see far more ammo against her. And the we've heard it before doesn't float my boat.

It cost Al Gore the election. It will cost us the election if she's the candidate.

I don't know that I'd vote for her - her behavior in this campaign has cost her my respect.

54. Totally Agree
Upcoming Swiftie commercials:

1) Obama spiritual advisor asking God to damn America (with a few of his other racists statements thrown in)

2) Michelle Obama proclaiming that she had never been proud of America

3) Obama doing cocaine/drugs as a young man (admitted usage), while John McCain is going to the Naval Academy

4) Rezko real estate deal and campaign contributions

5) Samantha Power admitting that an end to the Iraq war in 2009 is just campaign talk

6) whatever else is discovered about this unvetted candidate in the next few months

Anyone who doesn't see this coming probably doesn't have much experience with how general elections go and is relying on hope a bit too much. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if the Swifties bring up Willie Horton somehow.

"Woe betide the politician, and especially the Democratic politician, who makes a racist appeal, no matter how artfully they think they've constructed it." And just how unartfully worded have the clintons been and their surrogates who've had to resign?

Words that should be carved in stone and should have been heeded by the expensive mr mark penn.

Thanks for highlighting them in your post, Me. :hi:

respectful of hilary clinton which is more than I have for the Jr. Senator from New York.

mark penn and hilary, no doubt, calculated how many they would lose by leapfrogging over the line and decided it was worth it. Blowback from miscalculations can lose elections.

That lame "as far as I know".

Seriously, I think that was the moment she lost me for good.

It was shameless behavior. Whatever it takes is not the motto of the Democratic Party.

What's that line from U2 song -

something about becoming the monster so the monster will not claim you.

Perhaps those years embattled with the right eroded her moral center.

43. what a magnificent tribute to his mother
Sometimes I'm perplexed at people who hurl "sexist!" at Obama, considering the two very strong women in his life, his mother and his wife. How can you call anyone a sexist who is married to Michelle Obama? I don't get that.

I have yet to read either of his books, but they're both on my "must do" list before the summer's out.

Got the nomination based on her ability to create estrogen?

Didn't seem like a good reason to vote for her then, and guess what?

Get over the because she's a woman.

This 50 year old woman has - it's about the candidate - not their biochemistry. Or their pastor's bigotry, either.
