No, that’s not a trick answer. What we have in power now is a dangerous right-wing radical faction. Kerry is, by every possible measure, the conservative candidate this year. That book, the authority on such terminology, defines conservative as “a defender of the status quo who, when change becomes necessary in tested institutions or practices, prefers that it come slowly, and in moderation.”

1. Traditional Conservatives

More traditional conservatives have been saying this for some time. It's the reason Pat Buchanan has been taking Bush to task recently. NeoConservatism is not real conservatism, and there's been a growing war within the Republican party over this growing tide since the late 80's. The amazing thing is that's it's managed not to split the party, but that may be coming. The split nearly occurred in 2000, but, naturally, the media didn't pick up on the real significance of the Bush/McCain battle. If they had, it may have been the catalyst for the split to occur.

I think, though, that it's a bit off the mark to continue to refer to NeoCons as a "radical fringe" because of the implication of its minority status. It's radical alright, and it is on the fringe of the political spectrum. But, it is also the growing core of the Republican party. NeoCons have guided official Republican policy for most of the past decade. They are a cancer on this country, with all the implications that goes along with that characterization.

For a second in 2000 I actually considered voting for McCain, especially with Bradley fairing so poorly.

I had plenty of friends that we big repubs because of their beliefs in fiscal conservation. Bush has been an utter disappointment, they were liberal republicans, if such a term exists. Once Bush went Jesus Crispy on them they bailed.
