Go figure: Dean wallops Kerry for campaign funds
Presidential hopeful John F. Kerry was pummeled by Vermont Gov. Howard Dean in the quarterly race for cash that ended yesterday, raising only $2.5 million to Dean's estimated $15 million.

Kerry aides disputed Dean's figures and said Kerry's personal loan of $6 million will give him enough cash to catch Dean.

``Our $2.5 million is real,'' Kerry spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said, though offering no proof Dean's estimates were fudged.

1. Kerry is such toast
I hope he stays in the race until after Super Tuesday. I do believe he is egotistical enough to do it.

I'm pulling for Kerry to get 14% in NH and beat Clark. That could help Dean along the way.

2. So Kerry's campaign doesn't think Dean's money is real..
I wonder if they think his supporters are imaginary too?

5. Yes, apparently they do...
...some boron on the Dean blog was trying to tell everyone that the blog posters were paid staff or automated bots. Of course, according to their logic, they were posting this for the benefit of paid staff or automated bots. See, Dean supporters are actually clones and automated blogging machines, donating monopoly money, which is apparently being accepted as legal tender to run ads.

4. those Kerry folk sure are snippy
``Our $2.5 million is real,''

and so is Dean's 15 million. Did these people go to grade school? Didn't they have even one teacher that taught them about good sportsmanship?

... passing itself off as a real newspaper. It has never passed up an opportunity to crap on prominent Massachusetts Democrats, including Kerry.

14. Nope
FEC funds have dried up, so they don't get all of the money until after some primaries, including Super Tuesday IIRC.

Even with matching funds he is nowhere near Dean in available funds.

17. Assuming that figure is correct
Am I supposed to be impressed that Clark had to steal money from people who had no wish to support him, just so he could top Dean's total by a paltry 200 grand?

24. Not even 200 kilobucks
Dean's total was $15,386,183.25. Assuming the figure of 15.4 Megabucks is correct, that's practically identical to Dean.

Even if Clark was getting enough matching funds to bring his total to 15.4 megabucks, that cannot be considered a walloping.

26. Actual Clark figure after matching funds: 14.2 megabucks
Although I would not consider 1.2 million more on the Dean side a walloping of Clark, He did honestly raise almost 15.4 megabucks to Clark's 10.5 megabucks. Clark gets 3.7 megabucks total in matching funds.

27. And the Dean campaign responds:
Statement from DFA Communications Director Trish Enright on What's Really "Real"

DES MOINES -- "We read today's story in the Boston Herald in which Senator Kerry's communications director questioned whether 146,697 supporters actually donated $15,386,183.25 to the Dean for America campaign.

"Frankly we can't figure out what is more confusing -- questioning the veracity of Governor Dean's record-shattering fundraising quarter or announcing with glee that your candidate raised only 20% of that, forcing him to dip deeply into his own pocket to fund his campaign.

"But, seriously -- is the Kerry campaign accusing Dean For America and its grassroots network of supporters of cooking the books when it suggests that only their fundraising total 'is real?'

"Let's be clear about what the 'real deal' is here at DFA:

"* Paid and/or full-time volunteer staff in VT, IA, NH, SC, DE, AZ, NM, OK, MI, WA, NY, ME, WI, ND, NV, MN, PA, TX, CT, VA, GA, MD, MA and CA.

"* 552,930 identified supporters.

"* Over 280,000 people have contributed $40 million to the campaign in 2003--including two consecutive quarters breaking the record for the largest quarter ever by a Democratic presidential candidate.

"* 163,000 supporters signed up on Meetup.com with more than 940 organized Meetups nationwide.

"* Over 172,000 personalized Dean posters downloaded from www.deanforamerica.com.

"* 35,000 emails processed daily by Dean for America mail servers (excluding mass emails).

"* Over 1 million emails received by Dean for America in 2003.

"* 2,910 entries posted on the campaign's official weblog, www.blogforamerica.com, and 314,121 comments were posted in response.

"* Set the unofficial world record for the largest conference call ever, as Governor Dean spoke to more than 1,400 house parties on September 30.

"A Kerry fundraiser summed it up best in yesterday's Boston Globe: 'I'm dying out there,' said this Kerry fund-raiser, a veteran Democratic moneyman who spoke on the condition of anonymity. 'There was so much excitement about John Kerry early on, and now there's none.'"

28. "I'm dying out there..."
Ouch!

Kerry's campaign staffer who started this ought to be fired. I can't imagine why they would want to publicize their lack of fundraising ability...another stellar gaffe from the Kerry campaign staff.
