""I want to thank you for beginning here in Iowa the road to the end of the Bush administration," Kerry told a crowd of around 2,000 who came to his campaign rally at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.
Kerry said he'd learned from listening on the campaign trail to Iowans' stories of anxiety, whether it was seniors on Social Security struggling to pay for prescription drugs or those who had trouble finding work and health insurance after losing their jobs.
Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, also pledged to improve services for veterans, a group he courted during the caucus campaign and many believed was key to his Iowa win.
He said the Bush administration has cut $1.8 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs, leaving thousands of veterans to wait for health care or prescription drugs.
"I think our value system in the United States of America says the first definition of patriotism is remembering and keeping faith with those who wore the uniform of our country," Kerry said."
