aka "The Ugly American"
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 10:22 PM by FrenchieCat
That is who we are known around the world as.
That is our name, whether we claim it or not.

So can we agree that......

We are sick of being shunned and feared by those who we are supposed to be leading.

We prefer not to travel abroad keeping our heads down,
while discussing with people from foreign land how much our government sucks.

We no longer want to act as a recruiting magnet for Al Qaeda.

We desperately don't need to be invaders of foreign lands due to lies told to us.

We can't take another 12 Billion spent in Iraq every month.

Our Armed Forces are just plain exhausted!

We want to sign a Global Warming Treaty now, and Al Gore showed us why.

We really do want to ban Cluster Bombs from civilian areas; how could we not?
We have to become leaders in Nuclear Non-proliferation.

We want to be respected for our equality here at home, and our respect for human rights everywhere.
We seek to once again, not just cherish the constitution but to obey it.

We don't want the dollar to fall any further.
We don't want the stock market to crash day in day out.
We don't need the price of a barrel of oil to hold our economy hostage.
we don't want to understand that many around the world have their fingers crossed, hoping for it.

We want to find Goodwill that isn't there now.

We need a brand new face representing us.
We want to shock and awe the world in a different way than the way we shocked and awed it once before.

We want the people of the world to know that we care about what happens to them,
and domestically, we want to help those who need it with jobs and health care.
We need new infrastructure and competent government.
We are looking for a new kind of economy that delivers new jobs.
We want our children to be well prepared for the future, by giving them a superior education.

We have wished for transparency in our government.
We want to remove the grip that big money lobbyist have had on our capital.
We must begin reversing all of the Executive orders Bush did, not in our name.

We need the Change.
We want the Hope.
And I'm talking about the whole world wants and needs it.

If we agree, than our vehicle for doing this is to elect Barack Obama as President of the United States.

If the Skinny kid with a funny name who exudes charisma, intelligent like no one's business, knows how to react under pressure, and does it with a smile that lights up the room can't turn the page for us, then it means that it can't be done.

If we fail to elect Barack Obama, then we didn't deserve him.
If Clinton is the nominee, McCain is what we will get.
And if we end up with McCain, the entire world loses, and loses very badly.

The Urgency of Now is why I'm Fired Up......because I'm Ready To Go and end the long saga
for which I have never been proud of......that of being known as the Ugly American.

6. Frenchie, thank you!
You have summed it all up, and I agree wholeheartedly.

This is too important!

(Let me just add, that if for some reason he loses, I will vote for Hillary)

7. Yes, it is too important......
and we will see it through....according to the math and the heart and brains of the American electorate. It will be hard work though.....cause of immovable objects that we need to move with a dolly, if required.

8. My father-in-law went to Saudi Arabia with Aramco in the 1960's
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 10:52 PM by thevoiceofreason
Befriended many Palestinians and Saudis.

Respected them and got respect back.

Had a great 10 years there and made many long-term friends.

Went back a few years ago (after his retirement). I went with him to meet these friends and folks of lore.

Most said: You need to leave. You are not welcome here any more. We know you are a good person, but you are not safe here.

Folks, that sucks. My father-in-law was crushed. In fact, had some of these folks over here in the states and we had a great time.

We have to mend bridges - reestablish our political capital. And revoke Condi Rice's passport (they seem to hate her most of all -- more than Bush).

you expect to vote on your behalf. Of course, you've just done it for your candidate, so to speak.

Sorry, but you make it just too easy ...

14. Have you read the book "Ugly American"? It was written in the late 50s
and it tells the story of why we have trouble communicating with other countries. Be insulted but remember that once upon a time we were respected in this world despite the actions of some of our citizens. We need to be in that position again.

Ugly American

For other uses of the term, see Ugly American (disambiguation).
Ugly American is an epithet used to refer to perceptions of loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless behaviors of American citizens at home, but mainly abroad.<1><2><3><4><5> Although the term is usually associated with or applied to travellers and tourists, it is also applied to US corporate businesses in the international arena.<6><7><8>

The term originated as the title of a 1958 book by authors William Lederer and Eugene Burdick, The Ugly American.<9> The film adaptation of the novel came out in 1963, directed by George Englund and starring Marlon Brando.<10> Englund was nominated for a Golden Globe award as director of the film.

The best-selling, loosely fictional account included descriptions of blundering, corrupt, and incompetent behaviors of Americans in Southeast Asia that were involved with American foreign aid. The book led to a move by President Dwight Eisenhower to study and reform American aid programs in the region.<12>

In the book, a fictional Burmese journalist wrote, "For some reason, the people I meet in my country are not the same as the ones I knew in the United States. A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They're loud and ostentatious. Perhaps they're frightened and defensive, or maybe they're not properly trained and make mistakes out of ignorance."<13>

18. Obviously this poster...
accepts what she sees in the movies as reality.

Have you ever left the US?

Believe it or not, in Viet Nam, most of them love us (US). They already forgot about the war.

Don't believe everything you see on TV.

21. Been out of the ol' US of A lately, Fredda?
After September 11th, 2001, people offered to carry our bags when they found out we were Americans in 4 different European countries.
And that was a whole 10 months later - during the summer of 2002!!

By 2006, they didn't even want to pick us up in their taxis!!

We hadn't changed - our government did ~ and that fact lies like a stain right at the feet of George W. Bush and the entire Republican-controlled Congress!!!

They have a complicated process themselves, and it was enjoyable to read an outside description of ours. I have also admired them since they printed, in Nov of 2001, a journalistic article detailing the various and curious Bush/Bin Laden connections, including Jr's first million, made in partnership with Osama's brother Salaam.
