Obama improved on the 38 percent he received statewide in winning January's leadoff caucuses. He did that in part by picking up at the conventions more support than Clinton from supporters of John Edwards. He also posted big margins in Iowa's largest counties and edged Clinton in some counties she carried on caucus night.
Obama, an Illinois senator, gained nine national convention delegates after all of the results came in from Iowa’s 99 counties.
"So this is a very significant moment in the campaign ... to pick up seven delegates today," Obama's national campaign manager David Plouffe told reporters in a conference call before all the results had come in.
Obama won 52 percent of the delegates selected Saturday from Polk County, which he carried in the caucuses with 38 percent. Clinton received 29 percent at the Polk County convention, slightly more than on caucus night, where she was a close third. Edwards received 19 percent in Polk County, where he finished in second place with 28 percent on caucus night.
Obama increased his margins in populous counties such as Linn, Scott and Black Hawk, which he also won in the caucuses. Obama also won in some counties carried in the caucuses by Edwards, such as Jasper and Wapello, and by Clinton, such as Cerro Gordo.
