due to the timing of the RNC, i know bush was not going to be on the iLLinois state baLLot unLess the the state LegisLation changed the cutoff date. i haven't heard the Latest on that mess.

someone mentioned that aLabama was another state with a simiLar issue of the RNC coming after their state's deadLine.

can anyone update me pLease? are there any other states with this issue? what is being done to get bush on the baLLot? can we stop it?

1. The deadline in NC
is before the republican convention. I talked to a couple of democratic state legislators though and they said the democratic-controlled state assembly would likely simply change the date to accommodate Bush -- another reason to remain unaffiliated.

4. Why the hell should they?
They took the election of 2000 on legal technicalities.

If they missed the deadline, they should have to kiss those electoral votes goodbye.

3. I'll take any votes I can get
And you KNOW there are enough stupid Bush supporters that won't see his name and just vote for someone else because of it!

NC, for example.

9. It's not the Repubs' votes Bush would lose...
...it's the independent, unaware voters who walk into the booth, look down, and say, "What? Is Bush ineligible in my state? Well, guess I'll vote for Kerry."

The number of voters who would do this is probably a few percent: that's GIGANTIC.

8. WOW. I never heard about this.
And the Illinois Libertarian Party is threatening legal action if the state changes the deadline to help Bush.

Anyone have a complete list of states where Bush may be INELIGIBLE to get on the ballot?!?!?!

12. The CA Dems passed a bill to put Bush on the ballot. They must love him.
Kevin Shelley proposed the bill.

13. Any Dem legislature that accomodates Bush are GOP enablers
this story has been buried by the politicians. in WV, Joe Manchin, the secretary of state is working to change the rules for Bush (while at the same time making 3rd party ballot access even more difficult)
email him at: mailto:wvsos@wvsos.com

Manchin of course is a republican posing as a democrat and has actively campigned against democratic gubernatorial candidates in the past, in favor of republicans. now he wants to be governor. goot love wv politics!

Bush shouldn't get a free pass. I f he wants to hold an unprecedented convention to fully exploit the deaths of 9-11, then he should have to pay the price for coming in to late by state rules.

15. The right thing to do:
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 03:17 PM by mdguss
Is to let the guy on the ballot and kick his ass in a fair and square election. There convention date is stupid for a number of reasons (this among them). But we shouldn't be trying to disenfranchise voters.

Let's imagine for a minute that Kerry wins with 57 percent of the vote--a real landslide. But Bush wasn't on the ballot in the afformentioned states. The Republicans--who will at least maintain control of the House--will be pissed...so much for undoing any of Bush's damage.

is beat him anyway we can. Beat him like a rug. Knock him down, kick him in the teeth, castrate him with a rusty pair of hedge trimmers (figuratively of course). BUT WHIP HIS ASS!!!

The Rethugs will be pissed however we win. Fuck them!

17. It's not disenfranchisement.
Voters can still write his name in.

It's not a Sec'y of State's fault that the RNC failed to look at election law. Why is it the responsibility of the states to PASS LEGISLATION to fix a GOP fuck-up?

And think about it this way: if the shoe were on the other foot, and it was Kerry whose convention was idiotically scheduled after these deadlines, do you really think the various state GOP leaders would make such a nice accomodation for the Democrats?

I say FUCK 'EM. The Republicans didn't do their fucking homework, and they should pay the price... or move up their convention date to meet the deadlines.

So what if it's hard to move to a new site so late in the season? I hear Coeur d'Alene, Idaho has some decent hotels. Make a few phone calls, double-up on accomodations, add a few sleeping bags and cots, and Ed Gillespie could move the convention just about anywhere to comply with the state election deadlines.

19. The "right thing to do" completely changed after Rethugs stole
the 2000 presidential election. They set a standard for using every loophole, plus criminal and corrupt act, they could find or dream up to claw themselves to the top. We're just advocating using loopholes. Pukes can consider themselves lucky.

And btw, who the f' cares if the Republicons are pissed. :wtf:

18. Has we got a list of the deadlines for each state?
Isnt the deadline for each state to put * on ballot before or after the repug convention?

and isnt the convention scheduled for late Aug-Sept? (I know its in NYC)

Hopefully there may be some chance that the GOP fuck-ups may help us, but then its a long shot.

21. Most states have already changed the ballot deadline
Bush will be on all ballots.
Most states have no deadline or post Sept 2 deadlines.
The following states have changed their laws and moved the deadline to after Sep 2:

Alabama
Delaware
Idaho
Utah
Virginia
Indiana
DC
Illinois
Maryland

West Virginia and California have unclear states that don't clearly forbid a late filing.
Indiana is the only state that has not completed a ballot change, so far the Senate has voted to change to Sep 2, action int he Indiana house is still pending.
