A PARTY OF COWARDS and the MEDIA THAT LEADS THEM
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 03:50 PM by FrenchieCat
This election and recent developments (Ferraro and Wright) at this moment, just like Katrina, could be a teaching moment about our history.

It is unfortunate, that to date, the press has chosen only to highlight Ferraro's and Rev. Wright's sound-bytes, and Wrights' delivery in particular, rather than discussing in candor a more reasoned perspective on the issues on which Ferraro and Rev. Wright speak.

The media, in the case of Rev. Wright, are allowing and even promoting his words to instill fear and doubt into the White Democratic electorate. The political Corporate media likes to portray itself as knowing something that we don't, but it appears that they, collectively, will refuse to enlighten those who most need it at this crucial time. Of course, this currently benefits Sen. Clinton's primary candidacy but nothing and no-one else.

I do believe, but without great hope, that it truly is the media's (electronic and print) duty to address the teaching moment that has been presented to us in this election. If it isn't done, it will have repercussion far beyond this election. It is not about making anyone feel comfortable or uncomfortable, it is about getting to the truth of the matter and addressing it with candor to provide a boiler plate level of background information. It is not much to ask, and we shall see if it is remotely provided. I say that it will not, because the narrative that the media has decided on is custom built to tear us apart, rather than provide greater insight.

And so, as it were during the lead up to the War in Iraq, and before that, the Selection of George Bush in 2000, I'm feeling certain that they will continue to hide our truths under the rug and act like its Business as usual.

But it isn't business as usual, as the Democratic Electorate, in particular, will soon find out.

I suggest that it is also up to Barack Obama himself to give Wright's words greater context by continuing to do what he has done; opening up a franker discussion on the issue of race, racism and America's call to change this. He may have to give a big speech on this issue as well, but remember that he stands as one of the accused by his association with Rev. Wright, and so he realistically cannot do this alone. The issue really is greater than just one man, in particular one whose candidacy is partially the reason for the lack of context given to begin with.

It is also up to those who call themselves leaders of the Democratic party (Hillary Clinton included) to do their civic duty in order to provide greater understanding to the issues rather than risk the danger of diluting and separating the party. They need to stand up and work to put things into perspective and not allow the use of the biased representation of Rev. Wright's sound-bytes to divide us.

Leaders like John Edwards, Al Gore,Howard Dean, Rep. Clyburn, Bill Clinton, and the rest do have that shared responsibility, no matter that they are not currently seeking public office, or that they are remaining neutral. They need to do this like tomorrow. They need to stand up forcefully, rather then to acquiesce to the fear of putting themselves on the line via silence. This is not simply about this election, it is also about the future viability of the party, and the chance to give our history perspective, as it appears to be so needed.

The alternative, that Black voters, pissed off by the lack of support given by those who should have been their allies on the question of race relations, and the history of the Black church, will stay home en masse in November is not unfathomable, i.e., don't believe that this can't happen, because it certainly can. It may not be at the 90% level, but it will be more than enough to lose the Democrats the election. And personally, I believe that they will be justified.

And so, in wanting to be perfectly clear, I do believe that if Hillary finagles the nomination due to this, and if there is no attempt by those who could make a difference in reference to the issues dredged by Wright's fiery sermons, than I foresee Hillary losing the General Election, and the Democratic party becoming once again irrelevant.

I add, as this is important, that timing is everything, and that the Black Community as well as true progressives of all colors are watching the clock.

What is most unfortunate, if this goes where I see it going, is that soon White Women and Men will be rationalizing that they were simply "fearful" and didn't understand what Wright's words meant, and will want to have the discussion that needs to be had now, too late. But that excuse will not serve them, and instead the whole sordid affair will conclude with Supreme Court nominations by President McCain. That is when these men and women will suddenly understand what happened......once the issue of reproductive rights and personal freedoms are placed in direct jeopardy. The often used "first they came for them, then they came for......." saying will escape the ones that will protest the most.

Morally, we cannot expect good men and women to stand behind an institution that does not stand by them. It is also the duty of those reading this to call onto their leaders and the media to do what is right instead of exploiting what could have been a serious discussion all in the name of gotcha politics.

Otherwise Wright's words will resurface and accurately be applied to the missed opportunity with his statement that the "Chickens have come home to roost".

13. I keep waiting too, Frenchie. I thought Richardson grew a pair, but
then he lost it again, after TX/OH. Now he's back in the shadows, along with most other Dem leaders, watching identity politics rip us apart while the GOP laughs and rubs its hands with glee.

Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 04:26 PM by JoFerret
This would be a valuable task to attempt:

<<I suggest that it is also up to Barack Obama himself to give Wright's words greater context by continuing to do what he has done; opening up a franker discussion on the issue of race, racism and America's call to change this. He may have to give a big speech on this issue as well, but remember that he stands as one of the accused by his association with Rev. Wright, and so he realistically cannot do this alone. The issue really is greater than just one man, in particular one whose candidacy is partially the reason for the lack of context given to begin with.>>

Then maybe a run for president of a united, better democratic party/ USA in 2016

14. It doesn't matter where I go......
I've survived up to this point, and I will continue. Sometimes those that are the most downtrotten are the least resistant to which party is in power, cause they always get the short end of the stick.

So it doesn't matter where I go, I just won't be counted in the numbers, my money will not either, and my vote probably won't either.

7. That's why the Democratic party is not known for Leadership
They basically have the instinct of a flea.

They consider this to be Obama's problem, because they can't see the bigger picture.

Just like so many voted for war, because it was convenient.

That's why I now consider them cowards; the whole lot of them.

They are never standing ground when you need them.

Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 03:58 PM by TheDonkey
if things continue to devolve under Hillary and her thugs I would consider leaving the party. It is disgusting how operatives in this party are playing into the media and trying to divide the party by damning the most loyal voting block in the party. The ignorant democrats out there are playing their part unfortunately and now scurrying to Hillary. I just hope we wake up and see what she is actually doing before it is too late and she runs the party and our issues into the ground.

Richardson gave us wink and a nod but they all sit still.

I never realized what a stand up guy Dodd is until now. All of the others (excepting Carter who has done everything but endorse and Dean who cannot)could be supporting charachters in Lilly Tomlin's incredibly shrinking party.

Gore
Mondale
Reid
Edwards
Richardson
Biden
etc etc

What is the point of saving your reputation and having all of that power if you are afraid to use it?

16. Frenchie, there are not going to be any Democratic Leaders stepping up to
discuss Wright's words or racism.

Bill Clinton, the leader of the party has already been slapped down for making 'racial comments' or racist or whatever. Same with Ferraro who has fought for equal rights for 40 years.

Edwards and Richardson? One is in office now and the other has a political future.

Kennedy? Maybe but I doubt it, he fits the mold perfectly of who Wright railed against.

The old leaders were told that the page was being turned on 'their politics' of old, the racist charge has been tossed around to freely for anyone with any political ambition to touch.

I just don't see it happening, and it isn't their fault, they learned they had to shut up early on.

If Bill Clinton (the first 'black' President) cannot speak without being trashed, no one will.

18. Maybe Bill Clinton was your first Black President, but he was never mine......
Him and NAFTA, Welfare Reform and his odious Sista Soulja moment always indicated to me that he was only a so called Black President when it suited his own goals.

As for Richardson and Edwards; your comments are telling indeed....that in effect, they should care more about their own future then the future of the party. So in essence, you only confirm that they are most likely to act as cowards due to personal political expediency.

Further, you have done exactly what the media has ordered for the shallow minds to do, created a caricature soundbyte of Wright's words to demonize him for your own political bent. You are the epitome of all that I described; an individual following cowards who in turn follow media directives.

21. yeah, everyone is a coward if they don't run to the rescue to of people that have
created their own problems and alienated their fellow party members in the process.

Dems are ok if they are voting one way, but are called cowards or worse if they don't.

Why should any of them stick their neck out to have their head chopped off, they have a political future and would be foolish to jump on a sinking ship.

Reap what you sow. Divisive politics indeed, seems to be the season.

When any dem has spoken about the primary if they were not cheering O on they were labeled a racist at worse or racially divisive at best. I don't blame them for staying quiet.

Look at it this way, it's 3am and the phone is ringing at camp Obama, who should answer the phone and exercise their superior judgement?

33. Hanna from her broken harp
sends her notes to heaven as she sits a top a wasted world. What is important here is those notes of hope that the ragged Hanna continues to send out to the higher power. That is the audacity to hope.

Please excuse my poor paraphrase of Rev. Wright's eloquent sermon woven of beautiful words.

Yesterday I took the time to poke around until I found a sermon by Rev. Wright, and I listened to the entire thing. I also managed to get a handle on some of the history of the UCC church. Now I'm quietly stunned by the ignorance being spread by the MSM (nothing new there) and the writers on the web. One can hope that people would want to speak/write with the authority provided by having a few facts, but that is their business. Rev. Wright finds himself the object of personal destruction, and most Democrats are just glad that it isn't them. They're not leaders dearest Frenchie.

A list of intemperate words by many religious figures would be easy find and provide for this comment; however, those do nothing to change the tone of the news. The detractors don't care anyway. Rev. Wright's words are difficult to grasp for the vast majority Americans...besides they want to throw stones ignoring their own glass houses. I do understand that he is a good man who has done good works. If only others would "feed their heads."

Take heart, there are still some of us who can see clearly.
