What % of African-Americans believe what Rev. Wright says?????
I am really curious about the percentage that actually believe his statements and other statements like it made by African-American pastors?

2. When he says.....
- God *&@$ America

- America invented HIV to get rid of people of color

- His basic "white man is evil and the cause of all of black America's problems" talk

12. Some white men ARE evil
I believe that and I'm white. There are white people in his church who have reported that they love it there.

His basic "white man is evil" is a straw man created by racists and opportunistic Obama opponents. He is only railing against the entrenched, elite — and lily white — power structure here in America. I can't believe that this needs to be explained on a "liberal" board.

15. I'm not AA but let me try and answer your questions
His "Goddamn America" was in a long tradition- and not even one that's rooted in the AA community. Think Jonathan Edwards and hundreds of other preachers. Here's what he said:

"God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human.

God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

What he's saying is that God will Damn America for these things. Now, I don't agree with him as I'm not religious or Christian in that tradition, but I understand what he's saying.

Yes, a lot of people in the AA community believe that AIDS is a manufactured virus aimed at people of color. It's ridiculous but it's understandable in the light of history. I saw a poll a few years ago on the issue.

He does not say the white people are evil. And using quotes around something that was never said is reprehensible.

21. Oh dear, another oppressed white person on DU
Why, you poor, poor thing. It must be so awful for you to realize that black people don't think you are wonderful after all. How crushing it must be to know that many black people in America are willing to ascribe nefarious motives to their government. Why, you'd think that we had a centuries-long legacy of slavery, brutality, disenfranchisement, unequal treatment by the police and the courts, and institutional economic bigotry. Or something. You'd think that thousands of mostly African American citizens had been left to drown in New Orleans, or die in the Superdome just recently.

But never mind all that. You got your fee fees hurt by the big bad black preacher. :nopity:

34. Because you either have to be pretty fucking thick, or a concern troll to ask those things.
Why would you even ask how many black people think those things, unless you thought they were outrageous things to think?

"How many DUers think that George W. Bush is a bad President?" "A lot? Really? But why?"

29. 1929 to 1974 Eugenics in North Carolina - thousands African Americans sterilized
The memories are still fresh in the minds of those of us who are middle aged or older:

Eugenics in North Carolina

Thousands Were Sterilized by the State

A five-day Winston-Salem Journal series, “Against Their Will: North Carolina’s Sterilization Programs,” provided the first in-depth account of the state’s eugenics efforts—targeting mostly the poor and people of color—and of the terrible toll, in the form of stunted lives, that those efforts wrought

The numbers reported in the Journal articles begin to tell the story. Between 1929 and 1974, state government eugenics boards authorized the surgical sterilization of more than 7,600 North Carolinians deemed to be “feebleminded,” “moronic,” “delinquent,” or “promiscuous,” as the administrative papers put it. More than 2,000 of the victims were under age 18. Ninety-nine percent were women. Tellingly

, as the civil rights movement gathered steam in the 1960s, the sterilizations, which already disproportionately targeted African Americans, were increasingly meted out against young blacks.

North Carolina, the series reveals, was a hot-bed of private and public support for such so-called “human betterment.” After California and Virginia, the state conducted the third highest number of sterilizations in the country. Enthusiasm for eugenics—even following the disclosure of the Nazis’ horrific endeavors in the field—ran high in the South after World War II. Economic elites, civic leaders, and social scientists saw an aggressive sterilization program as a means to “improve the race” while shrinking the welfare roles and reducing the black population along the way.

22. see Tuskegee syphilis study that ran from 1932 to 1972

Bad Blood: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study

From 1932 to 1972, 399 poor black sharecroppers in Macon County, Alabama were denied treatment for syphilis and deceived by physicians of the United States Public Health Service. As part of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, designed to document the natural history of the disease, these men were told that they were being treated for “bad blood.”In fact, government officials went to extreme lengths to insure that they received no therapy from any source. As reported by the New York Times on 26 July 1972, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study was revealed as “the longest nontherapeutic experiment on human beings in medical history.”

...
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study continues to cast its long shadow on the contemporary relationship between African Americans and the biomedical community.

Several recent articles have argued that the Tuskegee Syphilis Study has predisposed many African Americans to distrust medical and public health authorities.

The authors point to the Study as a significant factor in the low participation of African Americans in clinical trials and organ donation efforts and in the reluctance of many black people in seeking routine preventive care. As one AIDS educator put it, “so many African-American people that I work with do not trust hospitals or any of the other community health care service providers because of that Tuskegee experiment. It is like…if they did it then they will do it again.”
