Current U.S. News cover distorts Bush & Kerry's past
"1971 -- The Way They Were" Kerry vs. Bush

I initially read about this one over at The Smirking Chimp. Lots of people there are furious! Look at the cover, and remember, the photos are from 1971, during Vietnam. John Kerry is wearing a suit on the left, while Dubya is in full millitary uniform on the right! Also, the pictures, though black and white, have been "colorized" -- Kerry is in Red, while Bush is in Blue.

Subtle effects, no? Not hard to pick out when you've trained to see this stuff. But how many people who walk by the magazine rack at the supermarket can pick apart visual propaganda?:eyes:

1. Kerry looks like a pinko hippie....
and that's the message that they want to convey...
IMHO, we need to nominate Dean.

5. Yeah, replace a war hero with a guy who didn't serve. That would help
uncover Bush's desertion back then. Yep...great idea.

Are you sure you understand what the Gadsden flag stands for?

7. Yes, they'd never run a youth picture of Dean in 71.
Or maybe they would. They'd be comparing Bush's NG record and Dean's skiing technique.

Yes, Dean's the answer.

11. Not entirely...
They have some decent features reporting and a couple of fairly moderate columnists...of course, they also have John Leo (which I rip out of my copy every week...keeps the annoyance level down). And the coverage, while not terribly progressive, is at least not as "breezy" as in, say, Time.

14. here is some good Kerry media coverage....
An Op-Ed from a certain 4 star General in Sterling defense of Kerry in tommorrow's NYT....and please make sure to read the entire article! Nice attack last paragraph!

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR

A Sterling Record
By WESLEY K. CLARK

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.

When John Kerry released his military records to the public last week, Americans learned a lot about Mr. Kerry's exceptional service in Vietnam. They also learned a lot about the Republican attack machine.
>> snip

Last paragraph....
Although President Bush has not engaged personally in such accusations, he has done nothing to stop others from making them. I believe those who didn't serve, or didn't show up for service, should have the decency to respect those who did serve — often under the most dangerous conditions, with bravery and, yes, with undeniable patriotism.
