1. He was in much worse shape than Kerry is now
Ross Perot was getting the attention as Poppy Bush's nemesis.

of Clinton until later in the year..in fact, when did the Gennifer Flowers 60 Minutes thing happen?

Bill Clinton Poll Results

The May, 1992 Wall Street Journal presidential poll of 750 voters put Bush at 36%, (270 voters) Perot at 30% (225) and Clinton at 28% (210). The estimate for Bush's margin over the #2 man is six percentage points. Establish a confidence interval for this estimate. See "Bush" for an explanation of the general procedure

15. and in his re-elect cycle

CNN/TIME Poll Shows Clinton Up By 12 Points
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 10) -- President Bill Clinton holds a 50 percent-38 percent lead over Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) in the latest CNN/TIME poll.

The 12-point lead represents a slight drop from the last CNN/TIME survey taken in early April. Other CNN polls taken since that last CNN/TIME poll, including one the last week of April, showed Clinton leading Dole by as much as 21 points.

This indicates that Clinton's lead may have narrowed in the last ten days.

The poll was based on interviews with 1,011 adults, including 826 registered voters, between May 8 and 9, and it has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points.

Although Clinton's lead has dropped, the president still has a comfortable lead over Dole and, if his track record is any guide, Clinton may be able to gain back some of that lost strength quickly as he has in the past.

12. Bradley wasn't running
Clinton's chief opponents were Paul Tsongas and Jerry Brown. Tsongas made some headway early, then faded. Brown surged late.

9. Clinton was not in real good shape at this point...
I have a DVD of "The War Room," which lays out the chronology of the 1992 race pretty well. Clinton was mostly running 3rd to both Papa Bush and Perot up until very shortly before the Democratic convention. Then, right on the eve of the convention, Perot unexpectedly dropped out and seemed to semi-endorse Clinton. (Of course Perot later re-entered the race.)

Between Perot's drop-out and the convention bounce, Clinton quickly gained support, and by the end of the convention he was leading Bush for the first time, a lead he never relinquished for the rest of the campaign, even after Perot got back in the race.

10. Bush led Clinton and Perot 37-23-23
In a poll conducted April 20-22 1992, George HW Bush's approval rating was 42%, and in a trial heat including Bush, Clinton, and Perot, Bush lead 37-23-23.
