Will Labor and Pro-Choice Groups Back Hoeffel against Specter? |
|
I'm afraid that these groups may choose to remain neutral rather than go against one of a handful of Republican Senators with a (somewhat) pro-choice voting record and a not-too-abysmal voting record on labor issues.
Of course they'd be wrong to do so. Specter has shown absolutely no backbone when it comes to Bush's judicial selections. And the Supreme Court is likely to become the central focus of the abortion debate as justices begin to retire. Can you imagine Specter voting to kill a Bush supreme court nomination in committee, or supporting a Democratic-led filibuster? I can't.
Besides, even if Specter were a reliably pro-choice and pro-labor vote, he'll still vote for Republican leaders that are rabidly anti-choice and anti-labor. Both pro-choice and labor groups would do much better if the Senate were in Democratic hands.
