I know that there are lots of good reasons not to -- namely, giving your oppo too much time to dig up dirt -- but I can't stand the suspense! That's just my personality!

1. Absolutely no reason... |

...to name someone prior to the convention. Heck, in a normal presidential election cycle, we'd not even be halfway thru the primaries, and with Bush spending hundreds of millions, keep the target as unpredictable as possible. No reason to allow the GOP to narrow its focus prematurely.

2. I think He Should Name the Person in May: |

There's going to be a lot of clutter in the news-cycle in June and July. There's the 9-11 commission report, Bill Clinton's book (the VP needs to be announced well before Clinton's book gets released), Joe Wilson's book--which will push the investigation of senior officials back into the forefront. If Kerry announces his pick then, he'll get swept away and not make a big impact. If, on the other hand, he announces it in early/mid May when nothing much is going on, he'll get a lot of press, and have another person to deal with questions that will arise out of a busy news cycle in June/July.
But, still, he should take the time to make the right choice, even if that means getting pushed back in the news.
