Welcome to Ignore.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 07:00 PM by cbayer
I have observed a very interesting phenomenon over the past week here at the playground.

There have always been a few who will emphatically reply to someone who has just posted something outrageous or offensive that they are now ignored.

Recently, however, there are whole groups of people telling everyone who states a position different than their own that they are ignored.

They even talk about sharing their lists or publicizing them so that everyone can see who they disagree with.

I am hopeful that whoever wins the democratic nomination does not share this philosophy. George Bush has ignored EVERYONE who has not shared his point of view and this very behavior has led us into unmitigated disaster.

Sticking your fingers in your ears while sticking out your tongue is not just juvenile, it can be your ruination.

But no one is likely to read this.

Because, as a supporter of both candidates, I am probably on everyone's ignore list.

Sticking your fingers in your ears and pretending there are no dissenting opinions is childish. On the other hand, there ARE those who exist for no other reason than to stir up trouble on DU. I have a whopping 4 people on my ignore list and I think two of them are tombstoned.

Every time I try it, I wonder if I've made a mistake and might be discounting someone with some valuable points.

I only use it from time to time when I feel my head is about to explode. And then, only temporarily.

I don't have a problem with Clinton supporters on here. I love the threads where they really talk about what it is that appeals and draws them to Clinton.

Perhaps just reacting to having been beaten up in another thread?

Sometimes I ask these people what they mean or what they hope to accomplish, and from time to time I get a reasonable response and see more measured postings from them.

But most of the time they ignore me.

I think it's a cop out. It's like "Take that"! It's the ultimate cop out when a posters rant ends with YOUR IGNORED. Very adult.
I do not ignore anyone. Though many times the temptation has been almost overwhelming, I will NEVER hit that button. It's the equivalent for me of watching FAUX NEWS. You've got to know your enemy to fight them.
It does make it hard sometimes to stay within the rules. The urge to tell them to BITE ME is huge. Of course they wouldn't see it because I am IGNORED!

I held to your idealistic position as long as I could, but it was getting to the point where it was taking far too much time to wade through all the trash posts before finding anytyhng worth reading. So in the past week I have started putting all the morons on "Ignore," and suddenly DU is a pleasant, informative, interesting place again. I don't use because someone supports another candidate; just for those who are incapable of reason and decency. I see no reason to apologize for that.

I never used Ignore until about a month ago, and I have been here 5 or so years. My feeling was that I wanted to know what those with opposing views were saying so I could respond, rather than let it go. But there have been so many people this election season that are so vitriolic and idiotic, that I finally gave in and started to use ignore. I have about a dozen on it, and I think at least half of them have now been tombstoned.

I added 2 more tonight. But I do intend to continue to use it sparingly.

Mostly because I was afraid of what I would say to them, I'd get so angry - and of course back then there were repercussions for acting like an asshole.

You would think those who have 200 people on their ignore list would be the calmest, most positive posters on the board, but it's not the case.

I think the more people you have on your ignore list, the nastier you are.

living in a bubble when you only listen to or speak to people that agree with you, is a very narrow existence and leads to disappointment when your hopes are dashed, then blame someone else for it because you could not bear to see it coming.

a temporary state of bliss for the ignorant

kinda like, drugs are for people that cannot handle reality, ignore fosters ignorance

I'm hoping they'll join the team in a few weeks, and I can go back to putting people on ignore by an asshole by asshole basis. This ultra-negative mode her supporters have gone into has been surreal, especially considering the state of her increasingly moot campaign. I'm sick of seeing constant negative attacks on the man who has already effectively won the nomination. We need to be fighting McCain.

Or only the strident few who insist on dumping on positive posts or gloating over struggles encountered in the campaign? I feel pretty confident that most supporters of both candidates share similar values and should not be ignored.

And because I support both candidates, I recognize that each team has their POV on this and not all will agree with you.

76. What is the Clinton POV on this?
I've tried asking Clinton supporters this, and none of them respond. How does Clinton win? I've seen several arguments detailing why Clinton's delegate lead is insurmountable, but I've never seen a response. I even tried to look up "how Hillary can win" earlier today, and I only got articles from last Summer. Surely they'd have a response article out by now, after so many have commented on it.

Oh, and to answer your question, I started out with just a few strident ones. But this has been getting so out of control that the list just keep growing. I checked and quite a few of the people I set to ignore either disabled their accounts or were banned. I'm still hoping the others will come around.

She seems to be quite busy right now.

71. There is only one partisan reply here.
Most have chosen to comment on the issue without saying ANYTHING negative about either candidate or their supporters.

It's really a nice thing to see.

68. I'm also a supporter of both candidates,
and the way things have been here lately, I CAN'T WAIT for us to finally have one of them as our nominee!

George Bush has ignored EVERYONE who has not shared his point of view and this very behavior has led us into unmitigated disaster. Very good point! :bounce:

I don't know how many ignore lists I'm on, and I don't really care, but I haven't placed anyone on ignore. I'm just selective in the posts here in GD-P which I read, and which posters replies I read sometimes.

73. I have about a dozen people on ignore
Simply because they repeatedly post things I find reprehensible. I occasionally go through my list, and find out one of them has been tombstoned. So I take them off. And when they rejoin under a new name and start posting the same crap again, they go back on the list. So it always stays at about a dozen.

BTW, no one on my ignore list has posted on this thread so far. So I can see all of you. :hi:

86. same here for my use of ignore
many of them are early disrupters - the mods get them soon, but I don't want to wade through their junk to get to interesting and informative posts. And some people are so irrational or hateful about one of the candidates I just figure, I'm not going to learn much from someone like that. Or someone who attacks someone (me or someone else) irrationally. Maybe they'll calm down in a few months.

GD:P is not nearly as bad for me as some describe, so I must have ignored some of the key troublemakers!

The 3-post rule is probably helping too.

81. I agree 100% and rec'd ur thread!
I have never used ignore. Ignore is just a sister word for ignorance. It reminds me of the right wingers who refuse to listen to evidence of evolution. I have seen people be "ignored" for merely MENTIONING Rev. Wright in a negative manner. It is important we all listen to desenting views on a regular basis. I listened to Michael Savage today, I can't stand him, makes me want to puke, but I forced myself because it is important that I get BOTH sides of the story. If I had my way, the only people I'd ever listen to would be Bill Maher, John Stewart, Michael Moore and DU... but that be an awfully lonely and quiet world. :(

84. I'm Not Really Sure What Your Problem Is
While there are posting rules, remaining civil at all times is not one of them.

Uncivil posters derail meaningful conversation far more often than inspire it. Some people take the First Amendment so seriously, they confuse the right to free speech with the right to be heard, and so chastise others for using the ignore function. Of the latter, there is no such right.

Most of the people on DUers ignore lists got there for good reason. I can't control others' speech, and I can't make up a DU rule that all assholes must be tombstoned. But I can use the ignore function and remove those persons' ability to anger me.

95. Actually, civility is a rule here at DU.
I'm not chastising anyone for using ignore. I've used it myself. I am just observing the trend of ignoring people simply for disagreeing and crowing about it at the same. time.

This post made me laugh out loud because I just read another thread wherein someone said "Welcome to ignore" to a fellow DUer with whom they disagreed. <sigh> I was thinking it's becoming an odd trend to announce your ignoring of someone...and along comes your thread. :)

Honestly, if you want to ignore, then ignore. But to ANNOUNCE that you're ignoring is funny. The Internet and email have made people BRAVE (!) behind screens -- willing to say anything and mostly say things they'd never dare say to someone's face.

I have never put anyone on ignore, so -- it's just you and me here I guess -- supporting both DEM candidates.

Too funny.

Edited for grammar.

I remember when the boys marked my face with green magic marker because they didn't like me.

It's a false bravery promoted by a false sense of strength because you are a member of a group.

We are not the only bi-candidates here (term stolen from another DU poster who stole it from Margaret Cho). We have just been cowed by the intense partisanship.

91. I don't have an ignore list. There are a few here that seem to never have anything
to say of any substance, but I've found that I can easily ignore them without a button. I like to listen to both sides of an argument anyway so I feel that I have all the info I need to make a decision. Even some that I have found to be obnoxious on occassion sometimes make a point that I had never considered.

So I'm putting the whole board on Ignore and I'm just gonna talk to myself.

Talk.

Talk.

Talk.

Who are all these ignored people replying to me? Why don't they just go away?

Seriously I'm building up a small list 'cause DU is just too friggin' boring without GDP but certain crap I just don't want to look at right now. But my list is nowhere near the 200-300 range I hear some people boast of. It's about 40 right now although one of them just got TS'd so I guess I can remove him. It just gives me too much pleasure to click on his profile once in awhile and admire his granite cookie.
