Granted there might be a slim few who really didn't think it was a good speech, but if you look at the majority of folks who have come out against this speech they are either hardcore rightwingers (Rush, Gingrich, et al) or some hardcore Hillary supporters on the DU. I have not even seen Hillary's campaign or her surrogates be critical of the speech.

1. I think it is more than that
They are threatened because the old game won't work and now they don't have the faintest clue what to do, how to effectively attack him. He has rewritten the rules of the game - and they are shocked, confused because it always worked before - and now it will never work again.

3. Zing!
It's the game. The game has just been changed. It's as if the board was upended and pieces are flying in the air and everyone is just... grasping.

they will be seen as the people who are not evolved enough to speak of race on an intelligent level.

2. How threatened??
What is the threat in the speech? Why would a non-Obama supporting member of the democratic party be threatened by this speech? It was an exercise in damage control given by a politician. I don't see it as a threat of any kind.

Right wing lunatics aside, they seem to be threatened by everything.

9. The threat of things outside of control.
The threat of being outed when you'd rather not be.

The threat of change when, you're not sure change is a good idea.

Lots of potential threats in that speech.

20. Outed as what?
I apologize for not understanding. Will I be outed as a law abiding, tax paying productive citizen who mows his lawn regularly? Change is outstanding.

Are limbaugh, hannity et al and their followers going to be outed? Is that possible?

I see know threats to anyone in that speech.

21. Love ya My Friend
I thought it was a good speech, just questioned its timing and purpose. Obama is first and foremost a politician just like Bobby Jindal the new Governor of Louisiana. His followers in that state haven't found that out yet but they will. Nothing wrong with being a politician except the toxic attempts to distance yourself from your profession.

18. he's the real deal, boss.
i want to convert you, boss. he is the real deal. he wrote that speech, staying up till 3 am, they say.
he is not your ordinary politician.
let me tell you something. i am done with race. we all need to be done with race. and when i walk around with my obama button on, the whole world knows that. i can talk to black people, and be treated like just another person, instead of being looked at a little cross-eyed, until i can find a way to prove i am not some cracker. i want it to be like that without that button. electing barack would be a start. not because he is black, but because he will be a great president, who just happens to be black.
it will be a new day, boss. he is the real deal. he means every word that he is saying. there is not a phony bone in his body. diplomatic, yes, careful, yes. but phony? no way.
trust, boss. we will have a government we can trust.

19. No need my friend
Whomever gets the (D) nomination gets my vote and support and maybe a few bucks (thats to be determined based on my finances not their chances.) I'm not as swept up as you but I look at every politician with a jaundiced eye and I think thats healthy. We don't need carte blanche hero worship of someone who aspires to that job.

this one is different. i know you will be behind whoever wins. i just want you to know that this is no ordinary politician. this man is a leader. and have we every needed one so badly?

Wow. I want to be like that without the button, too.

 mopinko  and thank you so much for your work on the campaign here in Ohio. Following your lead, I'm working in Kentucky on new voter registration, and heading to Pennsylvania to canvass in the coming weeks! You set such a wonderful example for our DU community, my friend.

6. I can't name any other political figure who could have pulled off such a speech.
It was honest and frank. It was, at some points, uncomfortable. It was reflective and caused many of us to look at our own family and friends, and their viewpoints on race.

It was something different and for some people, change is a scary and unwelcome thing.

7. Agreed
We are seeing it. All of his insights and points being proven left and right. By his opponents trying to dismiss his speech as a hollow political ploy (implication: he doesn't believe what he's saying) and by the media who is proving his point by desperately trying to buoy this whole issue in the pursuit of a "dramatic story".

What he did is hold a mirror up to each and every American.

It seems that some are hellbent on denying what they see in the reflection.

15.  If I can ask one question without getting bashed for it
I saw the speech , for me personally I did not hear anything I did not realize already . I am not a racist or a repub or a Hillary fan .

I just do wonder one thing in general . When I consider the racism in this world and mainly this country then I have to wonder who will really change their views based on Obamas speech today ?

If someone is truely racist they will not have listened and if they did listen is this speech going to really change their minds ?

Maybe it will to some extent I don't know .

Will his speech today bring racism to a boil from those who do not want anyone who is black to be recognized ?

The thing that concerns me most is that I know there are groups of racist people out there and the speech will not change their minds it may only fire them up more .

Was he more than anything else focusing on the youth ? It must be known that anyone who supports Obama is not a racist so he has them already .

Was it just fear of losing some supporters because of what Wright said ?

These are just questions , not judgments .

16. why don't you let people speak for themselves? I hate to say it, but,
this sounds like some bullshit that you pulled out of your own asshat.

Ass-covering speeches in a presidential campaign aren't as inspiring as you might think.

Are you frightened now that you have nothing to harp about? Are you desperately seeking something to hold onto so you can have Hillary win at any cost? Do tell.

Some people embrace denial like some sort of life preserver when their boat's sinking.
