He threw his gramma under the bus for political salvation.

He contradicted himself and showed himself to be a smoothe liar.

Good speech yes, but not gonna do him any good politically.

That's what I'm hearing on the AM news, CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

108. It kinda is
A lot of people follow the media narratives. Unfortunately, that means that Hillary Clinton would be in much worse shape because the media never liked her to begin with.

Bill Clinton was dogged with "questions of character" throughout his campaign. The stuck... but not enough to lose a reform-hungry voting population. I still think he would have won if Perot hadn't been a spoiler.

You can make up your own mind all you want.

In politics perception is everything.

Obama crafted an excellent public perception. Unfortunately it just blew up.

Sad to say.

Not I AGREE WITH THE REPUBLICANS and SMEAR A DEMOCRAT - Underground.

Get it?

There is another site for that crap and I'd be more than happy to see this poster go back to the dark side.

Get it?

If a poster continues to agree with Republicans and smearing democrats, then eventually they get a granite cookie.

Get it?

I show the same courtesy to any poster who shows their ass over and over again.

*edit - I'm really tired of seeing this defended here, hence my harsh attitude. I cannot wait for the primaries to be over and this sort of thing will just take care of itself.

9. I am hearing the same things this morning.
I expect it on Fox, but the others are being critical. They are saying it was a good speech, but that he will not sway blue collar Dems, etc. Out here in the real world, I am hearing that it was his opportunity to bring up GLBT and gender bias and he failed to do it. He will lose much of his base of black voters if he brings up the GLBT issue. I was really disappointed that he talked of civil rights and could not acknowledge the one group of American's who experience bias much worse than African Americans do.

most of them are GOPers to start with.

But this just reiterates that HRC is the GOP candidate of choice. They are foaming at the mouth to run against her and won't hesitate to throw the "kitchen sink" right back at her. And it will work. And we'll lose again but glad to see you Clintonistas are so pleased with her disgusting tactics to win this nomination.

In fact, without them he would never have won as many primaries as he has done! Hillary tends to do best among the establishment Democrats. Obama would get most of them, plus he expands the electorate by attracting youth, independents, cross overs, and others.

Well that is one thing I am not. I don't really care for either of the two candidates left standing. Somehow you lost my point about Obama not addressing the ENTIRE issue of civil rights. He just spoke of black/white issues. It was his opportunity to include in his rhetoric the GLBT and gender issues that still remain in this country. He blew it. He is no Martin Luther King. He had the chance and he blew it. My point was about his cowardice to speak to his fellow African Americans and others who discriminate against gays in America.

This will be hammered home in the general election among white and hispanic voters, this is what teh rethugs excel at. Keep in mind McInsane has a lot of hispanic support with his long history of open support on immigration. Don't get me wrong Hillary is not prize, but this is very damaging.

Many assholes do good works also - that argument is bullshit. I'll vote for Sen Obama in the general but the blind worship I'm seeing on this board is troubling. 42. LGBTs and the grandmother
If the MSM is sugesting Obama the his granny under the bus then I think they are off the mark. I don't think that is what Obama did. It was a poignant and personal comment on what it meant to grow up as a dark-skinned boy in a white household in a racist society.

But it really does highlight the issue of identity politics.

Every gay person had more than just a grandmother condemning and disapproving of their identity. They had the whole vocal family. And in a hell of a lot nastier language too.

But where does that leave us?

50. When Obama campaigned in Kansas
They didn't know who he was or recognize him as the grandson of his white grandmother. I doubt Obama spent much time with his grandma in Kansas during his formative years. Obama never knew his grandma as a child or spent time summering with the locals throughout his growing up years. If he had, his grandma's statement would never have made him cringe because she never would have said it. It's a false example of taking an instance out of context and using it as a model for AA and white relations.

From Wiki:

"When Obama was ten, he returned to Hawaii under the care of his grandparents (and later his mother) for the better educational opportunities available in Hawaii. He was enrolled in the fifth grade at Punahou School, a private college-preparatory school where one of his teachers was the sister of Neal Boortz, the radio talk-show host."

153. Disingenuous? No.
Most experts agree that to really get through to an audience, a speaker should mostly memorize a speech with just a few notes on a written piece of paper for prompting. He may not have had time to memorize his speech, but they sure memorize their stump speech, don't they. The problem with his reading it from a teleprompter is he didn't even read it that well. He stumbled on words in quite a few areas.

who disagrees with them. The poster gave a desenting opinion. It DOES NOT MATTER how quack that opinion is, ignoring people is (ignor)ant. It is no better than right wingers who ignore evidence of evolution because they do not agree. It is no better than Bush who ignores any opinion other than his own, surrounds himself with yes men, and causes so much damage to our country. I see people on here everyday who say awful things from both sides that I disagree with, but I would never ignore them, because if you do the price is far to great. If you disagree with someone you should do so loud and clear and state your case and explain why you do not feel that they are correct. They might be too blind themselves to consider what you have to say, but you will have done the right thing, instead of ignoring someone else and sticking your fingers in your ears like a grade schooler. I am not picking on just you, I am making an effort to posting this or similar information to every person I come across on this board who uses ignore because they simply disagree. Be that person a Clinton supporter or an Obama supporter.

134. Gentle criticism of racism, whatever the source, is throwing someone under the bus?
And how is it that people say the pastor wasn't thrown under the bus, yet his grandma was?

Where is the logic?

136. I watched CNN last night, and it was almost ALL very positive towards Obama
Even freakin' Bay Buchanan was saying glowing things about the speech.

But, nice rightwing talking points you've got there.

142. This is just the sort of negative crap that we don't need.
Why can't we hear something positive from Clinton supporters like you? Why does it have to be non stop negativity? This is the type of old style gotcha politics that Obama is trying to change.

143. This issue is about more than Obama.
The brief OP oversimplifies the issues of race in this campaign and provides nothing of substance in response to Obama's speech, and this is all too common in the overly personalized politics of today. Whether Obama wins or loses is not what really matters, and I say that as an Obama supporter. We all should consider the candidates' records, vote our conscience, and put our hearts and minds into our own activism for the betterment of the country, no matter who is the president. We also owe ourselves a thoughtful dialogue on all issues and should take the time to have that dialogue right here on DU as well as in other settings.

What really matters is the issues involved in this campaign - including racial division, which has been a huge impediment to true democracy in this country. Senator Barack Obama did his best to put some of our racial conflicts into perspective - he suggested that we do not have to be entrenched in our respective bunkers, and that we all need to initiate conversations across racial lines and engage in a dialogue with each other whether we agree or disagree. These issues do not belong to just Obama - he is doing his best to address racial divisions and their social costs by his personal commitment to activism and public life. That's more than many of us can say, that he cares enough about these issues to get personally involved. It's a sad comment on our country that we have so little ability to look at the substance of a speech like this without oversimplifying, and that we are all about the horse race and nothing else. It's sad that we get so personally attached to our individual preferences that we do not think them through.

One more thing - we like to play the equivalency game when it comes to identity politics (i.e. Obama addressed race but not gender, white men would get fired for saying the same thing Wright did, etc). Very little time is taken in these arguments to insure that the comparison is valid by looking at what was actually said. Wright has been compared to Don Imus, for instance. But did Wright use any racial slurs in what he said? Did he intentionally target any individuals? Does it make a difference that Wright is pastor of a church supported largely by African American dollars, where as Imus worked for a publicly traded company? As Obama mentioned in his speech, I think it is important to look at both sides, but there's some lazy thinking going on in making comparisons without thinking through what is similar and what is different.

152. To be fair throwing "gramma under the bus" is the "new politics"
It was also very slick how Obama equated Ferraro with his mentor pastor Wright. Smooth liar -- yes indeed.
