You're taught in Drivers Ed that speeding is against the law,
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 02:38 PM by Exilednight
your taught the penalty for speeding is a fine. Your told that the police set up speed traps all the time to catch speeders and issue tickets.

Would you act surprised and outraged if you get a ticket if caught speeding?

No?

Then why act surprised when Michigan and Florida moved up their primaries against the rule and receive the known punishment?

1. But the passengers don't get a speeding ticket, do they? Joe & Joan Q. Voter
were the passengers, not the driver in this case.

10. Believe it or not, in some states the passengers can get a ticket if the speeding.....
results in reckless driving and the passengers played a part.

2. Some people are slow learners.
I didn't know a cop would fine me for speeding until one wrote me a ticket last month. A learning esperience!

:wtf:

3. It was the Florida Republicans who moved their primary.
So why should the Democratic voters be disenfranchised (again?)

And, both state parties attempted to move their primaries out to a later date and were prevented from doing so by Republicans in both states.

So the DNC is "punishing" (how I hate that word) Democratic voters based on Republican actions. I don't think that's a good call.

12. Are you hoping to find new DUers that believe that?

Florida Dems voted to move the date.

I was talking about that.

17. You can't change the results after the vote is taken. If the Dem's were really against this.......
then they should have voted against it the first time.

16. Because the Florida Dems could have stopped it, if they wanted to.
BTW, the legislation to move the date was introduced by a DEMOCRATIC legislator.

4. Some speeding defendants think they can bargain with the prosecutor
for a lower violation.

That is Florida and Michigan in a nutshell.

6. I'm upset for the VOTERS of Florida and Michigan
Their party leaders and elected officials screwed them. Now those folks will still go to Denver and still be part of the National Convention (voting or not voting - they'll still go) and the voters of those two states will be left at home.

To fit your analogy - the parents got the fine for their teenager breaking the law.

9. I loved Driver's Ed!
Since my parents got an insurance break if I attended, I had no choice. I liked the trip we had to plan. I got a speeding ticket once in 1984, wasn't surprised at all, I was speeding like a motherfucker on my way to visit my mother in law. Thanks for bringing up the subject.

11. And you're taught that a joint can get you 20 years in prison
in some states, but most DUers are opposed to such draconian penalties.

In 2000, the Republicans in Florida relied on a strict interpretation of the rules. "No, Palm Beach County can NOT keep counting votes - we're gonna open the Secretary of State's office on a Sunday evening. Hey, rules are rules!"

DUers were opposed to enforcing arbitrary rules that disenfranchised people back then. Sad to see how things have changed.

14. Yes I was taught the penalty of pocessesiing pot when I was in HS. Do I agree with the......
penalty? No.

Rules are rules and I wouldn't be surprised if I was caught and was sent to jail.

Does it make it right? No, but that argument doesn't hold up when you're caught.

Yes, life can suck and is sometime unfair, but don't be surprised when you break the rules and they're enforced.

18. Actually, I think both Michigan and Florida were good choices for earlier primaries
They are both states that are absolutely crucial to a win in November, and they deserve the attention they would have received early on. Michigan could also have used the money a long campaign would have brought (don't know about Florida's economy). I think it was good for the state lawmakers in both cases to try and work to promote earlier contests for their states. When the grab didn't work, they tried to change it back.

However, one key piece of this whole thing people seem to be missing is whether or not Florida and Michigan deserved earlier primaries than Iowa or New Hampshire. It's my belief, which I stated prior to the primaries, that they do.

19. I agree with your statement, but if you want to change your primary date......
work within the rules and do not do it after candidates have already announced their candidacy. This should have been something that was talked about right after the last Presidential election, not after this one already started.

20. Flawed analogy--Like royalty, IA, NH, SC, NV are allowed to speed
You only get a ticket for speeding if you are one of the "little people"--if you are unfortunate enough to be one of the "little people" , the police can give you a ticket if somebody else from the same state as you is caught speeding. :silly:
