Girls Line Up to Hear and See Woman Who Could Be President
from Lancasteronline.com/ Intelligencer Journal

March 19th, 2008

Fourteen-year-old Carolyn Westphal arrived bundled up, her furry hood drawn tight against the cold wind that whipped around outside Millersville University's Pucillo Gymnasium.

Carolyn was just one of many young women who attended the event hoping to see the candidate who could become the nation's first female president.

"I like her because she's very outspoken," Carolyn said as she and her mother waited for the doors to open. "I like what she has to say about health care, but I would also like to learn about some of the other things she supports."

-snip-

Like many other young women at Tuesday's event, Carolyn noted the historical significance of Clinton's candidacy and her role as the first viable female contender for the Oval Office.

"It's exciting," she said. "From that perspective, this is a really important election. I just wish I could vote."

-snip-

Millersville University students Shannon Bartman and Samantha Goldfarb said they believe this election is a huge step for women. They said they feel privileged to be a part of history.

"It's empowering," Bartman, 21, said. "Many of the world powers have had women in charge, and it's about time the United States has one too."

Bartman said she has been a fan of Hillary Clinton since she was the first lady and supported her during her first campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate. She said she strongly supports Clinton's stand on health care, specifically her plans to make health care available for young people just out of college.

While Goldfarb, 19, identified herself as a supporter of Barack Obama, she said she has a lot of respect for Clinton.

"The whole thing has been amazing," Goldfarb said. "It's refreshing to see a strong, intelligent woman stand up and speak her mind and be taken seriously."

-snip-

Rachel Freeman, 11, who also attended the town meeting, said she didn't know a lot about Hillary Clinton, but thought she would make a good president.

"I think it's really neat that she's a woman and she has a good chance of winning," Rachel said as she stood in line with her father, Mark, and brother, Bennett, 9.

1. Girls, if you want to be president
try to marry a guy who will be or is already a president.

Poster #1's statement has NO effect on those kids. And further more... I remember posting a while back about how some young kids I sent here were discouraged. I seem to remember you as being one of those who advised them to get a thicker skin.

154. Rather like the person who said she cried because of Obama's speech
and someone mocked her tears.

Civility in the Thunderdome is hard to come by.

This thread was presented in an open forum for people to comment on. The responses can not be controlled, or limited to just the ones you would want. If you want an all positive thread about Obama or Hillary, you'll have to post in their respective forums, people. Out here, anything goes and usually does.

To say rather civilly that one hopes that this woman is not the one to fulfill the dream of a woman becoming president doesn't seem that out of line. Not at all. There is mocking, and then there is mere comment.

This I say as someone who has tried to have a positive thread about Sen. Kerry on occasion. While disappointed when the thread goes south, I am neither surprised nor would I insist that people who don't share my enthusiasm go away. It is, after all, an open board.

...I'll take my daughters to see her.

My 6-year-old daughter asked me not long ago, "Mommy, have we ever had a girl president?" (Everyone to her is either a boy or a girl, regardless of age.) Now she thinks she might be able to be president one day!

So yes, girls of all ages are excited! And shame on all the buzzkills who are dumping on this thread!

5. Could be President.. but thankfully - most likely will not be.
Sorry, as a female I can understand the excitement of wanting to see a woman as president. I hope for that someday as well.

But, I want that women to be moral, good and put this country on the right tract. In my opinion, Mrs. Clinton is not that woman, and she will quite possibly un-do a lot of the hard work that many women before her have done to get her to the place she currently is (a serious contender for President). 4 years of her political backstabbing, currupt dealings and scandals will make it so another woman won't be allowed near the whitehouse for a generation at least.

Thanks, but i'll do my best to see that another demographic achieves its first - Obama in the white house. Because I like the MAN.. not the gender or skin tone.

This is a free forum. I post things all day long, and see some of the same posters jumping on me about "dumping" now being the same people who piss Clinton stuff all over my Obama posts.

No, i'm sorry - this is a message about girls excited to see a women president. I'm certainly free to speak my mind about why I hope some little girls realize that this isn't the best choice (IMO) "woman" to take that roll.

117. I understand your response.
If this has happened to you, then I can understand why you would be angry. I don't think turn-around is fair play, but you might.

I acknowledged your right to post anything you want anywhere you want. I just felt is was very disrespectful to do it on this particular post.

It was positive, it did not slam the other candidate and I did not think it deserved the treatment it got.

And I do this on positive posts about Obama that get pissed on as well.

I would like to read a positive post from time to time without watching it deteriorate into a poo flinging battle.

But that's just me. I have no right to tell you what to do. I was also just voicing my opinion.

Peace.

So seriously.. it's one thing to defend your candidate for every possible reason, but stop the damn hypocrisy already.

125. Bo has done more harm for racial equality than anyone in my
memory. He has hurt us all. Black and white. He is turning friends into enemies with his divisiveness. Where did all this hate come from? We all know the answer now. The really bad thing is he and his wife undoubtedly are teaching their daughters the same narrow mindedness.

I feel that even Obama would be totally embarrassed with many of the posts. Unfortunately, part of his policy is that he wants to unite the country if voted president. He cant even unite his own party.

157. And the "woman" you support is doing a better job of uniting the party?
I don't think EITHER of them had any intention initially of splitting this party.. but supporters on both sides have picked who they like, and have drawn a line in the sand. I don't think Obama is trying to divide this party, but I also don't think Clinton is the racist scum that the media is trying to make her out to be. I dislike her for other reasons, but that is not at all one of them.

I have spewed in the heat of the moment about Obama and made snarky koolaid kid comments, I'll admit. Passions are running really high for a lot of reasons, among both sides. But I try not to crap on positive Obama threads--really, it's childish and doesn't accomplish anything except making you look like the douchebag you are.

We get so angry when supporters of Hillary dump on our positive Obama threads...what makes it right for us to do the same.
This article is about girls who come out to support a woman who they look up to and admire. There is no insult to Obama here, no slight whatsoever.
This article, and thread, is purely meant to be positive. To dump on that is immature. At best.

Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 05:32 PM by sfexpat2000
I've taught my kids to be proud of what they accomplish, not to try to take credit for the work of others.

To work hard and play by the rules, not to try to change them when it's convenient.

To respect their opponents, not to mock them when nothing else worked.

To do what is right by their lights, not to do what is expedient.

To ask for support from their peers, not to seek out power brokers to cut corners.

To work for what they earn. To try to deserve it.

My nieces will be much better people than Hillary Clinton.

Ignore the bile that spews from the haters ... it's a reflection on them.

I'm glad girls are witnessing this race and some are having that reaction. I'm glad all kids are witnessing this race. I hope they're not learning from the rancor and they're learning from the hope (yes, I used the "H" word). I love that so many kids are learning about the possible in this race and not to let obstacles, including race and gender, stop them. And I'm thrilled that they're seeing a race where 2 of the 3 top contenders aren't white men. Nothing against ya, guys, but they have enough of that modeled for them -- there are lots of kids who are learning a whole lot of lessons here and that's a good thing.

132. If I could recommend this post twice I would, for two reasons:
Firstly, it exemplifies in heartfealt terms what heroes/sheroes are to children -- hope -- a belief in all the world's possibilities.

Secondly, it underscores how menacing the Obama supporters have become.

140. You are cold. This is a story about girls feeling excited they could do anything.
But you seem to tied up in your own stuff to recognize that.

To classify such a sweet, straightforward local community article about young girls as manipulative menacing propaganda doesn't give you much credence.

You just come off as uncaring, heartless.

143. I typically don't take well to being manipulated. And menacing
wasn't my term, thanks.

135. Gender plays no role in my decision
Neither does race.

A woman for president would be good if it was the right woman. I don't think this is the right woman.

138. This isn't about you. It's about little girls excitement and dreams that they can do anything they
want, and have seen no woman do.

It's a thread of hope! Please.

153. That's cute. As much as I prefer Obama, the idea of a woman president is exciting
When I worked for a women's group and was required to publicly support Hillary, I went to a Club 44 event and it was pretty neat seeing all the women who brought their daughters. A feminist leader gave a speech where she said "let's show our daughters that they can grow up to be president", and that was pretty inspiring. That's why as much as I object to her campaign tactics and sometimes find her disingenuous, the prospect of Hillary Clinton as president still excites me...if we can't have Obama at least we'll still make history.
