Water Cooler Talk at Work: Obama Rocked People With His Speech |
|
I work in a white collar office environment. Equal mix of older women and men... few young people under the age of 30. Surprisingly, the youngest two members have been Clinton supporters. About 20 people altogether.
The speech came up as topic of discussion... almost everyone saw parts of the speech and over half the people were circulating the full text and had read it.
Everyone commented that it was about time someone talked so truthfully about a difficult topic. Many people shared stories of how older members of their family used racial slurs or held racist views and that, until Obama talked about it, they were somewhat embarrassed to ever share it with anyone. All agreed that Obama's words touched them and almost everyone looked upon it favorably. Someone mentioned that Fox was still playing the sermon snippets even this morning. More than one person commented that Fox was ridiculous and reaching for something that wasn't there. Nods of agreement all around.
This is just a slice of one tiny piece of America. But I hope, I believe, that this is happening all over America today. I feel that Obama has done something very incredible: he has opened people's eyes to something they couldn't see but has been so obvious and in everyone's face and has enabled them to intelligently discuss it. And he did so truthfully and fairly. He is getting credit for that and people are responding positively. The recent polls showing Obama's 'drops' I believe will soon start to show a tremendous rebound.

7. We chatted about it today on IM. |

I'm a virtual white collar worker. And we were buzzing about it too. That said, I work with a wild bunch of liberals, so YMMV. :D

voters. Prior to the Mar. 4 primary, lots of discussion, since then zip. A lot of people in this country are oblivious to any news in the past week.

I hope other water-cooler conversations like yours are occurring across the country. I'm concerned about the spate of polls out today reporting a sharp dip in Obama support in several states.
He's treating us like adults. Unfortunately, many age-adults don't think like adults. The Repub party has counted on that for many years.
