No one can justify this. Saying "we're sorry" just doesn't quite cut it. So without dialog, how can we finally heal the destructive history that so many just choose to shove under the rug. I certainly can understand the anger. I was a white kid, living in a "leave it to beaver" neighborhood in the '60's. I guess I was lucky. I didn't have to worry about waking up to burning crosses in my front yard or wondering if I would make it school alive. No,this was never discussed by my parents much less school. It was just simply "not to be discussed." Period.

To think that this kind of evil was even tolerated, is not only disgraceful, but is down right embarrassing as a country who was founded on hope. Whether, it's race, gender, or religious beliefs, we still see this intolerance spewed. Yep, it's time for a new dialog.

2. that, and a "Time to Kill"
and "Mississippi Burning" hit a nerve with me as well. I did a lot of research into this a few years ago for a script I was writing. What started out as a "simply" idea, turned into nights of pure obsession. I was determined to know.

3. "Saying 'we're sorry' just doesn't quite cut it." - was that ever even really said?
i remember hearing about australia issuing an http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7241965.stm">official apology to the aborigines, but i dont recall such a moment in our own history. i do hear a lot of "i never owned slaves, get over it" from the conservatives, however. many agree it is a shameful past, but i dont know that our government has ever issued an official apology for racism against african americans or native americans, which i believe have been abused more than any other ethnic groups in the usa.

U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study at Tuskegee

"The American people are sorry -- for the loss, for the years of hurt. You did nothing wrong, but you were grievously wronged.
I apologize and I am sorry that this apology has been so long in coming."

-- President William J. Clinton, May 16, 1997

Doctor examining patients

Nearly 65 years after the U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study at Tuskegee began, President Clinton apologized for the U.S. government's role in the research study, which was carried out in Macon County, Alabama, from 1932 to 1972.

The United States Public Health Service, in trying to learn more about syphilis and justify treatment programs for blacks, withheld adequate treatment from a group of poor black men who had the disease, causing needless pain and suffering for the men and their loved ones.

and then he makes a botched up try at something ...resembling an apology here:

Clinton Opposes Slavery Reparations
But he says he's considering an apology for slavery

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 17) -- President Bill Clinton says he does not favor compensating the victims of slavery, because the nation is so many generations removed from that era that reparations for black Americans may not be possible.

But Clinton, in a radio interview that aired Monday, said he would still consider extending an apology to African Americans for their ancestors' suffering. Rep. Tony Hall (D-Ohio) proposed the idea last week.

"I think it has to be dealt with," Clinton told the American Urban Radio Network. "There's still some unfinished business out there among black and white Americans."

Clinton said rather than reparations, the nation needs to continue to work to erase the effects of past discrimination. Over the weekend, the president called for a new national dialogue on race, saying the nation should strive to become a "truly multiracial democracy."

"If we can pull this off, the United States will be by far the best positioned country in the global society of the 21st century," Clinton said. "And if we act like we don't have to think about it 'til the wheel runs off, there is a chance the wheel will run off.

The reasons behind the hate and violence are quite different.

8. Yes, I know that....
But, I just wanted to remind everyone of the war and the need to "bring 'em home".

Actually, they both involve cultural hate, though.....I was just trying to be clever and when I saw the first photos I was instantly reminded of this photo which was just as horrific. Peace.

11. Uhm, yes, both are horrific.
However, one is the murder of citizens, by citizens, over supposed crimes, and the other is murder of dangerously violent mercenaries, by citizens, in defense of their country.

Blackwater's been running around shooting women and children in foreign lands. These Americans committed crimes like "looking at a white lady wrong".

TOTALLY different things.

9. Hmmmmm
I have to wonder what you're trying to justify w/ that photo.

I remember hearing Mike Gallagher the morning after those photos came out. He stated that maybe it's time to turn the country into one big sheet of glass, i.e. nuke 'em and commit genocide.

The short sightedness those photos produced were only dwarfed by the images of the towers on 9/11 crumbling to the ground along side images of middle eastern citizens celebrating in the streets.

It took a brave American to put it all into context.

My heart filled w/ hate after seeing those images on 9/11. I saw those celebrating in the streets as a hardcore enemy, one that deserved the upcoming repercussions.

I was horribly wrong.

The fact is that the towers and the pentagon hit were done by a small band of misfit punks who should have been caught way before they ever boarded a plane.

There's no Army over there. Just a bunch of extremists who thrive off of the hate and/or control we throw their way and use it to recruit higher numbers.

The isolated accounts of the celebrations in the streets in the middle east after 9/11 were shown on American television for a reason, to incite our masses and manufacture an enemy.

The images of contractors hanging from the bridge in Fullujah were horrible, but such images are not common and should not be used to stereotype middle eastern citizens.

The use of the image here in this thread is pathetic.

sorry if I touched a nerve. Like I said, when I saw the original pics, it reminded me of the hateful thing they did in Iraq, that is all. Again, I claim "cultural hate" as my basis. Maybe part of your explanation explains what I was trying to point out about what happened here years ago.... "Just a bunch of extremists who thrive off of the hate and/or control we throw their way and use it to recruit higher numbers"

in any other developed country for a group of people to gather together to hunt down and PUBLICLY murder an innocent citizen - for that matter, even the vilest criminal - and have themselves photographed glorying in it. And for all the photographs, probably with impunity.

That was the activity of people who deserved to be regarded as a sub-species of mankind. I don't know if it was heard of in any under-developed country, other than for mutually cannibalistic purposes between tribes. But that was a shared culture, and murderous personal hatred would not have been part of the equation.
And shame on you for seeking to minimise the enormity and shamefulness of such a unique culture as your lynching (I'd put 'lunchng'!) possees. The nearest I've seen to it, was a film of a larger species of ape chasing a member of a smaller one, to kill and eat it. Again, a more practical purpose.

And for the record, it wasn't just hanging bodies up; it was stringing up terrified and baffled living human-beings.

I think she cares, but she really doesn't quite understand the depth of what this topic is all about. It's about getting inside that time and feeling the fear--on both sides. There were some whites who tried to help, but with corruption and many being outnumbered it was a daunting task.

26. "Alabama"
Oh Alabama
The devil fools
with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
is all that it meant.

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks
tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don't it take you down home?

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama.
Can I see you
and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land
I come to you
and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
to help you along
What's going wrong?
