Looking for quotes by preachers
With Wright, the right is clearly playing the race card. They always go after black religious leaders, whether it be Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson, or Jeremiah Wright. I only have a few examples of the link between awful religious right leaders and major Republican politicians, so I'm hoping others can add to this thread, especially examples that concern McCain.

"A Godless theology of hate that no one dared try to stop for a thousand years produced a harvest of hate."

Pastor John Hagee, endorsed McCain

"When my late father -- Religious Right leader Francis Schaeffer -- denounced America and even called for the violent overthrow of the US government, he was invited to lunch with presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr."

Frank Schaeffer, son of religious right leader Francis Schaeffer

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense, I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don't have to be nice to them."

Pat Robertson, endorsed Bush

2. I think it is the way the church thinks here
Congregationalist are not Baptist and when I lived in the South the Congregational Church was called a black church. Growing up in NE with one in every town we just call it a church. It also teachers to think for your self. Some Congregational churches will not even join the UCC. It is also a church that has a history of making sure we got rid of slaves.

3. There's always "The Truth About Bob Jones University"
Why do Republicans get a pass on openly courting anti-Catholic bigots?

"On Catholicism

If there are those who charge us with being opposed to the doctrines and theology of the Catholic church, we plead guilty. All religion, including Catholicism, which teaches that salvation is by religious works or church dogma is false. Religion that makes the words of its leader, be he Pope or other, equal with the Word of God is false. Sola Scriptura.

From the time of the Reformation onward, it has been understood that there is no commonality between the Bible way, which is justification by faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ, and salvation by works, which the faithful, practicing Catholic embraces.

We love the practicing Catholic and earnestly desire to see him accept the Christ of the Cross, leave the false system that has enslaved his soul and enjoy the freedom of sins forgiven that is available for any of us in Christ alone."
