Geraldine Ferraro comments on Obama's Tuesday speech; gives 2nd interview to The Daily Breeze. |
|
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 11:22 AM by VolcanoJen
Geraldine Ferraro resents being lumped in with the Rev. Wright in Obama speechIn the speech, Obama sought to place the inflammatory remarks of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright in a broader context, in part by placing them on a continuum with Ferraro's recent remark to the Daily Breeze that Obama is "lucky" to be black.
"To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable," Ferraro said today. "He gave a very good speech on race relations, but he did not address the fact that this man is up there spewing hatred."
SNIP
"What this man is doing is he is spewing that stuff out to young people, and to younger people than Obama, and putting it in their heads that it's OK to say `Goddamn America' and it's OK to beat up on white people," she said. "You don't preach that from the pulpit."
Ferraro also said she could not understand why Obama had called out his own white grandmother for using racial stereotypes that had made him cringe.
"I could not believe that," she said. "That's my mother's generation."

While "both BO and I are affirmative action candidates" is grating to me too, it still doesn't raise to Goddamn America, 9.11 was deserved and Israel is a dirty word. They were put side by side - and her condemned way MORE than Wright http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA3v7ON5XdA

100. Ferraro's comments quoted above are anything but liberal. |
|
It seems that Geraldine has a real problem with black people obtaining any kind of power.
Ironically, while some politicians are remembered for having recanted their racist views late in life (George Wallace, for instance), Geraldine Ferraro seems to be intent on replacing her liberal legacy with racist words.

diminishing the question at hand by making race the issue.
Race relations are a highly charged issue and diverts the attention from the question at hand.
Playing the race card is a way of changing the subject to dodge the question at hand.

He was equating people that attack Ferraro and focus on race with those who attack Wright in their focus on race. Both to the ultimate distraction of real issues.
Is this actually an intelligence gap between Obama and Hil supporters?

21. Big time. And this part is fun... |
|
:eyes: It was Obama's campaign that drew the most attention to Ferraro's remark last week, and suggested they fit with an pattern of racial comments by Clinton surrogates.
"That's exactly what he did," Ferraro said. "It was their campaign that started this."
In sum, however, Ferraro said she thought the speech was "excellent," and said she understood why Obama could not renounce his association with Wright.
"I think they got as far as they could go politically," she said. "They're looking at their base. Their base is African-Americans. They're looking at that and they're trying to walk a very thin line. They don't want to offend the African-Americans, and this is the way he did it."

I truly feel that she is hurt more than anything. What she is saying is so strange that I can't believe she can rationally deal with the situation any more. If I were her friend I would try to persuade her that she needs to stop talking publicly and start talking privately with a therapist to work through her feelings. I think she needs grief counseling over her lost legacy.

Even with her failings, even with Wright's failings, they are part of him.
He owned up to the contradictions and personal failings in regards to race on ALL SIDES. Black AND white.
This idea that he somehow hurt his white grandmother is fucking preposterous.

76. Some people will take it that way, but that's the beauty of the risk Barack took. |
|
He took the risk that most people will actually listen and comprehend what he was saying and not just react to the key words. It has long been the practice of politicians to take a word or phrase out of context and pounce on it. That's how they got "Kerry insulted the troops' intelligence," from a poorly phrased joke he told.
This is a breakthrough moment. Barack is taking the chance that his superb communications skills will actually penetrate to peoples thinking. Not everybody, even in Kansas, is going to ride the superficialities. He didn't throw his grandmother under the bus. He pointed out that even liberal and well meaning people can have remnants of soft racism that they may not be aware of. I hear this all too frequently, even from people who agree with me on most politics.
With some perseverance, he may even get people to a better understanding of Rev. Wright, who I largely agree with, and I'm white. It's an act of great courage and self confidence that Barack does not toss of Wright. I am not wholly sure that I like Obama's policies, but there is an intellect that rarely comes along in politics. He believes in the people.

If he only gave the speech because he wanted to appeal to his base of "African-Americans," then what explains the number of White, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American voters that also support Senator Obama?
Also, as a note to DUers, saying "the Blacks" is offensive because it's damn near tantamount to insinuating that we are a disease, you know, like The Plague. Whether or not Senator Obama wins the nomination, she's practically guaranteeing that Hillary won't receive any substantial support from African-American voters, and it's sad that she couldn't accept his speech and actually think about it before she made these statements.
I am absolutely infuriated.

From the linked article:
"To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable," Ferraro said today. "He (Obama) gave a very good speech on race relations, but he did not address the fact that this man is up there spewing hatred."
Obama has tried to make political hay out of distorting Ferraro's remarks. He further compounds his dishonesty by trying to lump her in with the bigoted remarks made by Rev. Wright, something even Obama knows isn't true. I would challenge Obama or his supporters to find anything remotely hateful in Ferraro's remarks. You can't. And lumping his grandmother in with Wright is even more disturbing, in ways too numerous to count.
Obama's performance on this issue has shown us time and again that he prefers to gain power and advantage by using destructive "divide and conquer" tactics - very unsettling for a presidential candidate. He can't discuss issues, he can't run on experience - he can only foment hatred among groups of voters and set them against each other, while spouting empty rhetoric.
His tactics are beginning to catch up with him, as they do with any person who uses them, be it Newt Gingrich, Ronald Reagan or Pat Robertson. They will be his undoing.

Barry sat of his own free will, listening to racist garbage for 20 years. Michelle grew up in it. She knows nothing else.
No wonder Barry went after Geraldine full force. Not only is she a racist, like his Grandmama: but she's also a Black-Christ-Killer

What she was saying is...IF a 43 year old "White" Larry were Obama , in his first year as US Senator, from the DIRTY politics of Chicago were the candidate in this primary..."White" Larry would have never won all the Black votes Obama has. There would be about ZERO hype surrounding "White"Larry...that I have to agree with..and THAT is NOT racist. just fact.

I know the job of the teleprompter writers is to move the Overton window rightwards (not that anyone on DU bothers to care who Overton was) but this is ridiculous.
Remins me of the black pastor who came out and said, father like:
"Obama must now renounce any religious belief that is hostile to the interests of this great nation."
