No More Sanctuary: America on Campaign to Ban Black Churches
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 11:36 AM by CatsDogsBabies
From what I understand, churches are and have been places of sanctuary. This is especially the case for people who have been denied access to all the goods society has to offer. The Catholic church in the United States helped Catholics and many others through a whole network of services, schools, hospitals and so on. What a great thing this must have been for Catholic immigrants new to the U.S. Even though many of these immigrants may have been shut out of mainstream society they were able to work their way up through all the things there churches provided for them.

There is no denying that historically this country has not been good to African Americans, so I can only imagine how much more the church was and is a haven in the black community. Just from what I have heard about Trinity Unity Church of Christ, it is a place where people can find community, where people can go for services, where people can find ways to help themselves locally, neighbor to neighbor, and yes, even a place where people can find some sanctuary in the midst of a society that is still in many ways racist.

I am not defending Rev. Wrights's inflammatory statements, but certainly some context is in order. It makes me sad to see people so willing to ridicule, degrade and destroy the community at Trinity United Church of Christ. I imagine that this church has really done a lot of good for a lot of people. From what I heard they have over 170 ministries and over 8000 members. If people are condemning Barack Obama for going to this church, then people are condemning every person who attends this church. Is this really what people want to be doing? Is this really what America is about? No more sanctuary, no safe place.

1. On YouTube, that is exactly what some people were doing
but then again, they were self-described Romney Republicans.
