TPM: Gallup: Obama's Big Race Speech Potentially Fixing Wright Situation
Gallup: Obama's Big Race Speech Potentially Fixing Wright Situation

By Eric Kleefeld - March 20, 2008, 3:11PM

Today's Gallup tracking poll would seem to indicate that Obama's big speech on race relations might be starting to fix the damage from the Jeremiah flap.

Hillary Clinton is still ahead 48%-43%, not changed too much from yesterday's 49%-42% lead, but the pollster's analysis shows some movement happening within the daily samples:

Obama made a major speech on Tuesday addressing the race issue in large part to help move past the controversy. While Tuesday night polling showed no immediate benefit for Obama, the Wednesday results were more favorable to him, as reflected in the slight drop in Clinton's three-day average lead. This suggests at least the possibility that Obama has stopped his losses. The tracking data over the next several days will be a crucial indicator of the lasting impact, if any, of the Wright controversy.

1. On MSNBC they're showing yesterday's Gallup Poll as the "latest poll."

2. it's called "mass-brainwashing" and "manufacturing the news", not reporting it.

4. I agree. And I know the (one of the) guys who writes the stuff in the teleprompters.
He's my "best friend's" husband and she told me he's there to "balance" the "left-leaning" news. :eyes:

3. They also acted like a poll ending on the 18th...

somehow represented how the Wright issue affected Obama and his pull with independents even now -- as though his speech meant nothing much (or perhaps they didn't care about dates).

They also bashed Mika excessively, imho, but that's nothing new. (Err, watching Morning Joe on my brother's Tivo)

7. The NY Times concludes otherwise
There were signs that Mr. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, may have suffered political damage from the firestorm over provocative comments made by his former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. A nationwide Gallup poll showed Senator Hillary Clinton of New York taking a significant lead over Mr. Obama in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, for the first time since early February, just after the Super Tuesday primaries.

8. Yeah, just like the home page of Yahoo. Too bad they're talking about yesterday's
numbers, at least in the article I'M talking about which talks about the 49-42 numbers when today is 48-43. Your article doesn't even HAVE numbers that I could find.

11. here in France
the paper Liberation ran a story saying that Obama's speach on race sucessfully dealt with the falsely created Wright scandal. Granted Liberation is a left wing paper, but over here in France people can understand Wright's anger, why is it so hard for leftists in America to understand it????

13. This silly story will die its own death
in another week or two. It will be followed by more stupid race and gender "stories" as our national political culture does everything it possibly can to avoid contemplating the economic crisis that is raging right beneath our national nose. And the national security crisis that neo-cons have created with their stupid war against the abstract noun of "terrorism."

These polls taken five weeks before the next votes are cast mean next to nothing.

If the cumulative effect of the race stories reminds the white majority that Angry Black Men exist in this world, and are simultaneously spun into the thought that a vote for Obama is somehow a validation of Angry Black Men, Obama's chances for winning the Presidency will go down.

We'll see in time how it goes. Gloating for either side is premature now.

But the Hillary supporters and the McCain supporters who are hoping that this preposterous crap derails Obama really ought to be ashamed of themselves. And if this kind of shit works, I will be ashamed of my country.

I still have hope, though. Rational hope that this type of shit will peter out and bury race baiting as an electioneering ploy once and for good.
