The current fracas about Wright and Obama is like Katrina
It exposes the raw, ugly racism that still exists in this country. So called liberals aren't immune. That's evident right here at DU. The double standard is in stark evidence with Obama just as it was in the aftermath of Katrina.

Right wing religious leaders? No problem. Left wing religious leaders? As long as they're white.

Calling Wright a racist is bullshit. Calling him a man who's said some incendiary and less than helpul things is a lot more accurate. Refusing to understand the cultural background that Wright came out of is another form of racism. Part of the double standard. Accusing Obama of "throwing his WHITE grandmother under the bus"- and it's always stressed that she's WHITE- is another form of racism.

The basic theme of undermining Obama has always been that he's not really who he says he is. He's a stealth Muslim. He's a stealth Republican. He's a stealth left wing radical. He's a stealth angry black man who just wants to "get Whitey".

I know how some people will respond to this; with the same tired crap about how Wright is a racist hater and Trinity is a hate purveyor, and Obama is part of it.

I don't think the media onslaught or the Clinton kitchen sink (we now know they're working this as hard as they can with SDs) or the faux liberals will be able to cost Obama the nomination, but they sure have revealed themselves again- just as they did over Katrina.

3. The thing is
it's the most insidious kind of racism. Those espousing it genuinely don't believe that what they're espousing is racist at all.

5. In fairness
a lot of the most outrageous crap seems to be coming from trolls who suddenly show up with 20 or 30 posts, and who are obviously just trying to stir up shit. What I find truely scairy and depressing is the amount of overt racism showing up on message boards around the net. The sheer number of haters, and the incredibly venomous and disgusting bile they spew make me fear for the Country. If the trash I've been reading is any indication, America is a sick and disturbed place.

7. Except Katrina killed 1700+ and displaced tens of thousands--whites, middle, and upper class, too.
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 04:32 PM by rudy23
Now the media playing the looting and shooting over and over again, to "swiftboat" New Orleans, and make it the "black" city--that's what this reminds me of. I just want to say though to be careful with using Katrina as a metaphor, at the risk of sounding like one of those liberals who doesn't get what's happening in our corner of America.

I know that it wasn't intended this way, and I'm not calling out. Just reminding that it's more that a metaphor, it's a problem that's still going on, which our Democratic leadership still won't fight for. We still have people living in toxic FEMA trailers, and there's no political will to let them do anything but rot in them forever.

14. Yes, I'm aware that Katrina was an incalculable tragedy
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 04:40 PM by cali
but I think the metaphor is apt. Both Katrina and this current Wright/Obama mess reveal the deeply entrenched racism and double standard that's extant in 21st century America.

10. People who are calling Wright racist have no concept of what racism is.
Wright is a victim of racism. He is angry and he bears some vicious prejudices because of the harsh treatment he, and his people, have suffered in his life, but he is no racist.

To have to believe that people would hate simply because they can is unfathomable.
