A challenge for those in a tizzy over the Grandmother comment. |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 10:45 AM by BL611
Swear on everything you hold dear that no family member or friend of yours has ever made a similar comment in private.

that a 'typical white person' is a grandmother raising a bi-racial grandson because her daughter could not be troubled with the responsibility.

|
I'm assuming you're changing the subject because I'm right and you have no interest in doing so because you, like me and just about every other white person (with maybe a couple i.e. atypical exceptions) has the same situation.

6. I don't think his mother could not be "bothered", but as for grandmothers, I know many |
|
who are raising or having a huge role in raising bi-racial grandchildren. Pretty common in these here parts of the U.S.

his early years. No mention of his mother's involvement. He lived with his grandparents and they raised him. Where was his mom in these early, formative years? Do you not think for a second her absence in those early years is not cause for some resentment on Obama's part, that his white mother abandoned him? He does touch on his resentments against whites in his youth in one of his books.

This statement is not even subtle.
Is raising a bi-racial baby the issue, or a grand parent raising a grand-child? While you raise a well honed meme of the bi-racial baby from the Reagan years, your vivid use of sterotypes is not really germane.
I, and several of my friends had periods where their grand parents or others raised them. If you weren't one of them, good for you.
I am not sure what stands in the way of you putting this part of the speech in perspective. Barak used anecdote from his personal experience. His personal experience is not, does not have to be the average. That is the power of speaking from personal experience, isn't it?
Why, I wonder, don't we get to hear more about Hillary, the Goldwater Girl years? Why haven't the pundits spent more time talking about Paisley, or McCain's childhood, or for that matter, half decade in a cage, tortured?

But voted for Obama in our primary.
The use of that word was ingrained in her from her upbringing just like the abc's were. And I have repeatedly asked her not to use it and I would have just as much an effect if I were to just ram my head into a brick wall over and over.
I'm not excusing it, I'm simply stating how it is in my family.
On edit: I meant this to go under the OP, not just in response to your thread. Sorry :)

Some of these people are really into FAKE outrage. Clinton supporters, especially ones in blue collar areas will have you believe that they've never heard friends, pastors, co-workers, family members ever say anything that was racially divisive.
That Obama explained that his grandmother, like his pastor used language that he didn't agree with was his way of being HONEST and transparent about his life. Remember, he wrote two books about HIS life.
I thought fake outrage was a republican trait.

16. Clinton supporters are from a different era, it seems |
|
This generation doesn't mind airing it out, talking over the differences. Us young people seem to want our country back from the likes of the Bushs, McCains and Clintons. These people are caught in a time warp where racism and disenfranchisement is okay. It's not okay with me. Words as well as actions account for something and Obama is willing to change the landscape for the better.
Clinton's candidacy is about keeping the status quo in place, looking backwards. Who wants to look backwards when forward thinking should be the dominant progressive route to a better today and a better tomorrow?

is that you have no comprehension whatsoever of the comments you are so outraged about.
The POINT of what he said was that EVERYONE has people who make ranting racist remarks on their campaigns, and EVERYONE knows it, but because we have such a stunted public discourse on race, we pretend that everything is hunky dory and then when someone slips up and makes a comment in public thats heard by people in private all the time, we get all worked up. Just sayin.

9. Obama's the first person to use his grandmother's private comments for political hay. |
|
I don't know of anyone else who makes public to the whole world private comments of family members or friends that he or she found embarassing.
If I were his grandmother I'd be appalled, and at her age, might even suffer a heart-attack listening to my grandson betray a family trust the way he has.

Thats funny. I would call it was a painfully honest use of personal experience to highlight our hypocrisy when it comes to the issue of race. The fact that we all get worked up when there are racial remarks said in public settings, when we all know that such sentiments are expressed in private by people we care for is one of the biggest hurdles to honest dialog about race in this country.
The fact that you view a public official as finally speaking on something we all know is happening, but pretend to ignore as "selling out" speaks volumes on were we are as a nation when it comes to race (not to mention public discourse as a whole).

To see the larger picture is the challenge, and I am proud to support a candidate who does that.

Obama didn't "throw his grandmother under the bus", that's just stupid. He cited a life experience of his to make a point about race in America. All this false outrage is awfully convenient, from all these DU'ers who would normally appreciate the truth being spoken about someone's racism. You people need to get a goddam clue. Focus on legitimate concerns if you indeed have them, not these right-wing MSM moronic talking points. You're acting like FOX-watching dittoheads.
