I'm becoming convinced both candidates are unviable, A Grand Compromise is needed
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 07:36 PM by Herman Munster
Al Gore/Barack Obama ticket with Hillary as Senate Majority Leader. The Grand Compromise.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/03/keystone-democr.html

In a sign of just how divisive and ugly the Democratic fight has gotten, only 53% of Clinton voters say they'll vote for Obama should he become the nominee. Nineteen percent say they'll go for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and 13% say they won't vote.

Sixty percent of Obama voters say they'll go for Clinton should she win the nomination, with 20% opting for McCain, and three percent saying they won't vote.

Grim.

1. No way. This would put Hillary in a position of arguably greater power, and she's the loser.

2. I think those poll numbers are absurd, but

I can't say I think your Grand Compromise wouldn't be just fine with me.

edit: to remove what I think was a triple negative - I've been posting in GDP too much recently...

4. They are not viable individually
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 07:47 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Barring Al Gore, the only ticket that would heal anything would be Clinton/Obama.

That would get about 3/4 of the Clinton defectors and about 3/4 of the Obama defectors.

(Obama/Clinton would lose about 3/4 of the Clinton defectors, and she would goose Pug enthusiasm with no benefit)

But there's no way to get to Clinton/Obama, so we're goin' pretty much nowhere.

Obama/Webb (just to put in a name) would get about 44%, and Obama/Clinton would also get about 44%. I'd see Clinton/Bayh at 46% and Clinton/Obama at 52%.

The key point is that though Clinton getting the nomination would anger many, very few black voters would want to keep Obama from being the first VP of color.

But, again, there's no real path to that happening. And the Democratic Party is quite blasse about the idea of losing this year, rather than make waves.

At this point, we may even lose a few house seats with Obama as the nominee. (The Senate is good because of the particular array of contested seats)

6. that's why i suggested Al Gore and Hillary gets senate majority leader
Because the only way a dream ticket would work is with Hillary at the top of the ticket like you said and that is unacceptable. The Obama people may agree to VP with Gore but never with Hillary.

9. That any Democrat who supports either Obama or Clinton would vote for McCain
is insane. How could anybody who is a true Democrat and a supporter of either of our candidates ever be pouty or pissy enough to claim if their candidate does not win the nomination that they would overtly vote for McCain by actually casting a ballot for him or to aid in his election by sitting on their hands and refusing to vote for the Democratic nominee? I think that any Democrat who chooses to do that would have blood on their hands and one would hope that they would at least have trouble sleeping at night after they witness what a president McCain would do to this country and the world.

I believe that Clinton, with her scorched earth policy to win the nomination at all costs is jeopardizing her future as a leader in the Democratic Party. If she splits the party I think her name will be mud among most Democrats, especially other senators if the election is lost because of her actions. Although she will be a senator from New York she would have a long, hard road to redeem her reputation within the Democratic Party. Currently she seems to want not only to burn the bridges, but to poisen the water in her quest for the nomination that she once believed she deserved just because of who she is.

11. they are called reagan democrats for a reason
They are conservative and voted republican in the past. And Hillary is winning them over, not Obama.

They will vote for McCain because they don't like Obama. Take that to the bank.

16. Who's voting for McCain? I'll vote Green, help build up the party.

We need another party or two to kick some life back into the existing one that pretends to be two parties.

Obama is the one who has divided the party, not Clinton.

Obama is the one who said a typical white person is a racist.

Obama will take the party down in defeat, just like the plan.

14. I'm not voting for a ticket with Obama on it.

I'll vote Green if he's on the Dem ticket. His campaign has divided the party and he needs to be held responsible for it.

Obama could never win my state, anyway, or any of the other red states the obamatized are delusional enough to think he can win.

If Obama's on the ticket, McCain wins.

If Obama cares about the future of the country, he will voluntarily bow out and let the party choose someone else -- not Clinton.

But he doesn't care, he's a stalking horse for the GOP.

19. She owes it to her supporters?
She owes it to them to remain in a race she cannot win, at the expense of the entire party? Really? That's what she owes her supporters?

Because I would think that what she owed her supporters was to display the leadership she's spent the last many months promising them, make the appropriate call, and concede.

25. That reminds me of MEN fixing a Barbeque
"Okay little lady, you plan the menu and run around doing the shopping, get the house clean and then stay in the kitchen and make the salad and fix the potatoes and get some good garlic bread and corn on the cob and the beverages and have plenty of ice on hand and We Men will take these delicious steaks you picked out and we'll go out with the guests and get the glory and bask in the warm compliments of what a wonderful job we did having a BBQ."

I kmow you mean well but I can't buy it.

"You stay in the Senate little lady and do the heavy lifting, ya know get the people on board, you wimmen are good at that sort of stuff while us men go out and greet the dignitaries and get the credit for running the government..."

Gore/Obama would work for me, but I expect that it will be Obama at the convention.
