I Registered Two Lifelong Repubs InTheir 80's For Obama Today... |
|
I was getting ready to go into the Obama HQ to do some phone banking today when I got a call from my regions team leader and she asked me if I would stop and take some registration forms over to a couple who lived at the other end of my town so they could switch parties. I assumed that they were switching from independent so they could vote in the primary, because we've been doing a lot of that for the last few weeks. When I got there the lady of the house invited me in. Normally we don't go in but I did because I was pretty sure it was going to take a while and it would have been uncomfortable for her to have to stand at the door filling out the form on my clipboard.
Turns out she is a youthful 80 year old and her husband is 83, and they have voted repub their entire adult lives. Apparently they decided they were never going to vote for McSame for many reasons, the main being they are staunchly opposed to the war in Iraq. The wife told me she had decided to vote for Obama weeks ago but her husband wasn't sure if he would even vote in the election, he said he just knew he wasn't going to vote for McSame.
Then they watched Obama's speech Tuesday and he decided that this was the man he thought would be the best person to lead our country. He told me he was tired of Bu$h and he was looking forward to "a smart president for a change" (his words). They had a lot to say about Hillary, but this isn't a slam post about her, suffice it to say they don't "trust" her.
They saw an article in the local paper about the Obama Headquarter's Grand Opening with a blurb about Monday being the deadline to be able to register to vote in the primary and they called in and asked how to register.
I've registered a shitload of college students lately and helped a whole bunch of independents in my area switch parties, but today spending time with these two people has been by far the most satisfying. Besides being a real sweet couple in the twilight of their lives, they are genuinely concerned about about the future of our country and they feel like they are actually going to be doing something about it in this election.

6. Thanks for the story; that's cheering! |
|
I heard a couple of perfect midwestern preppie males, young marrieds with their kids, out early on a Saturday, in the heart of Cupcake Land (a week or so ago), talking over McDonald's breakfast about what a bad idea Bush's War is.
I've also noticed that there are people who know (care) absolutely nothing about politics, and until recently maybe didn't even know who Obama is, but they DO know they dislike HC strongly.

7. Speaking of old people concerned about the future of the country, |
|
my grandpa has been a lifelong Democrat. He will be 100 in September. He still has his marbles and was a successful local politician for years. His main goal in life now is to live to vote in the next presidential election in November. He is sold on Obama right now. He loved the race speech and he loved Richardson's endorsement speech. He actually liked Richardson when everything started. But he wants to elect another Dem president before he dies.

He sounds like my Dad was. On his dying bed after the "supremes" annointed bush, he asked "are we at war yet??" This was right after bush got in the White House, and before 9/11. Thank God he didn't have to live through that trauma. I pray that your Gramp gets to see a Democratic President before he goes Home. I pray we all get to see it happen! Happy Holiday, DC:hi:

They're in a groove and stay there until earth shattering stuff comes down and they take a look around and say, "Hey!" "What do we have to do to make this better?" And along came Obama..I know the feeling after 8 year of bushit.

15. thanks for what you are doing, Jimmmmm, but I worry.... |
|
that some of the Rethugs are just party switching to bait the preference vote. Let's hope that they are really switching to vote for Obama. The fact that they could vote for anyone in the GE but are switching just before the primary still bothers me. I know in NE Florida that the Rethugs party switch ALL the time. They are like "professional party switchers" just to skew elections. And, you should see the gerrymandering that goes on here, too. We were just gerrymandered again in my precint this year before the primary that didn't count....
Anyway, thanks and I hope you gave those 80 year olds a big hug from all of us...

24. It's no surprise that republicans like Obama. |
|
He's more republican than democrat on many policy issues.
If you take out all the republicans who crossed over to vote for him in the primary, it looks as though he's leading because of republican support, not democratic.

My grandparents are diehard Republicans. We are going to visit them this summer. I might see if I can get them to switch and vote for Obama. It's always worth a try, but I wouldn't hold my breath expecting them to. My granddad is a Army Vet from WWII.

30. great story! But I have a question... |
|
...what is your take on how well he'll do in the primary? I know it's a month away, and Obama has a lot of time to work his way across the state. But what are you hearing about how badly - or not - the Wright story has hurt him?
The white votes everybody keeps saying he's losing, in my opinion, are the people who never would've voted for him in the first place. Are you seeing / hearing that?

31. I Think She Is Likely To Win The Primary In PA, But By A Much Smaller Margin Than Predicted... |
|
Obama's plan here has been the same as in many other states, bring in new voters and get them out to vote and in the process picking up delegates that should have gone to her. It's a winning strategy and it will be in the GE as well.
As far as the "Wright scandal", I do believe it only gives an excuse to people that wouldn't have voted for him anyway.

32. that's what I suspected... |
|
...instead of there being an "erosion" of white voters, these are people who would never have voted for him in the first place, or were looking for an excuse not to. Just like in OH, but I wanted to ask somebody on the ground there in PA.
Thanks, and keep up the great work! :hi:
