At last nights gig....Obama up the river... |
|
During a set break last night, I wandered off stage to sell a few t-shirts and cd's and I overheard the mention of Baracks' race speech. I butted in and chatted with three people about it, all positive and all of them for Obama... Then this older Biker guy comes over and buys a t-shirt (they are black and def look good on Bikers...) and mentions he is for Obama too. I asked him where he was from. "Up the River". Around here, "up the river" is slang for the people who live out in the woods, tend to be very conservative and distrustful of government, police, any authority really. We talked abut 5 minutes and he told me about his views and why, he told me about his friends (The Lost Souls MotorCycle Club) and how most of them support Obama. Imagine that, that old dirty Biker club supporting Obama...
Just another set break in Oregon...

8. My husband fondly calls people like that "wood rats" |
|
No disrespect meant by the term -- just an attempt to describe a category that doesn't generally get acknowledged.
Some of them were original-era hippies -- but with a blue-collar origin. When they dropped out, they did it quietly and without a lot of fanfare, and when the hippie era ended they didn't have middle-class lives to return to, so they pretty much just stayed dropped out.
They're not political and they've remained largely invisible -- which makes your story all the more interesting.

10. Around here we recognize two subspecies: |
|
The jackpine savage and the woods hippie.
Then you get the hybrid form--the Hippie Comitatus.

11. Do you think Obama appeals to libertarian-leaning democrats? |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 10:48 AM by XemaSab
That's my friend's theory for why Obama does so well in the west.
You think there's merit to this?
Oh, and on edit: great story! :D

14. I am in that category I think... |
|
Like a small "l" libertarian with a social conscience.
I was shocked to see an Obama sticker four months ago, now I see four or five a day in a town of 15,000. Thats cross over appeal!

I almost never see a Hillary sticker.
Yeah, I think I might be a small-l libertarian too in some ways. :)

19. When I read your subject I was thinking something totally different. |
|
Ever heard of "up a creek" and "up a river"....fighting against something seemingly insurmountable?
You really had me scared for a moment! Like the story.
