5. I have to laugh at the difference between the reaction two days ago to this story
and today.

As soon as it was revealed that it wasn't just Obama's passport that was breached, the air went out of the balloon for many.

I guess a partisan talking point and being able to demonize Hillary is more important than privacy concerns.

Secondly, if it was a Hillary advisor who ran this company, there would be thirty screaming, indignant posts about this on the front page and Drudge would have put his stupid little sirens.

9. . . .

All this sturm und drang about Hillary spying on Obama and it was an Obama donor's company that did it!!!

Really, I think somebody here nailed it when s/he talked about working for a travel agency and some other business where they looked up famous people in the records when they were bored. When I worked in banking, we amused ourselves by looking for funny names on the checks that were deposited. (One of our bank's customers was Long & Ready's Nursery, which was definitely the funniest business name!) You'd go nuts in those jobs if you couldn't amuse yourself somehow.

10. Two Companies -- Each with ties to the respective candidates
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 07:29 PM by BushDespiser12
The two companies that gained unauthorized access to Obama's passport files were Stanley Inc. and Analysis Corp., the State Department said in an e-mailed statement.

Stanley is a 3,500-person Arlington, Virginia-based company that this week won a $570 million State Department contract to continue passport services. Both the employees who accessed Obama's information in separate incidents were terminated the day the breach occurred, Stanley said yesterday in a statement."

2 Fired in Passport Case With Va. Firm

By ANNE FLAHERTY – 1 day ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the two contractors fired for snooping into Barack Obama's passport records worked for a Virginia-based company called Stanley Inc.

WASHINGTON (AP) — State Department employees snooped through the passport files of three presidential candidates — Sens. Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain — and the department's inspector general is investigating.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the violations of McCain and Clinton's passport files were not discovered until Friday, after officials were made aware of the unauthorized access of Obama's records and a separate search was conducted.

Mr. Obama's records were accessed without permission on three separate occasions — Jan. 9, Feb. 21 and as recently as last week, on March 14.

"Mr. McCormack declined to name the companies that employed the contractors, despite demands by a senior House Democrat that such information is in the public interest.

11. There is some shady if not illegal goings on here
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 08:02 PM by jimshoes
Some in January, some in February and now again in March. There has to be an investigation into what actually happened on those dates and who if anyone put the perpetrators up to it. I do not want to see anything swept under the rug before all the facts are known (if they even can be, knowing *'s justice dept) and I take no delight in one or the other's campaign being connected even remotely or tangentially, as the whole affair has a distinct rovian smell about it. We do not know if the first two instances are connected to the later one and if there have been any instances of any of the former candidates who's passport data may have been breached as well. I do not know about everyone else's balloons but mine still has a full charge of pissed off.
