W. Scott Thompson: Transcendent moment in US polls campaign
By : W. Scott Thompson

Now he will feel the confidence to rise above the Hillary taunts, like the appalling suggestion by Bill Clinton that Obama with Hillary as presidential candidate would be an "unstoppable force".

This had been less a serious proposal than yet another attempt by the Hillary machine to get at him, make him feel insubstantial aside their majesty and machinery.

He didn't take that bait, he turned it around on them, probably dooming Hillary's own hopes of being his vice-presidential running mate, if she continues to flounder in the vote count.

Well, of course, it isn't over until the fat lady sings, and either Democrat faces a formidable foe in John McCain. But with the economy shattered and world confidence in a (Republican) president at historic lows, it should be the Democrat's year. And we've seen the first truly presidential address by any of the candidates, unquestionably the finest since Kennedy's of 1960.

Obama has revealed what many of us have been suspecting, but wanting full evidence of, that he will be the transformative president to restore American standing in the world, bridging the gaps of race and religion in America, and showing how much a leadership of intelligence and charisma can do to bind up a nation's wounds.

Truly, if I'm right, there won't have been anything like it since Abe Lincoln.

8. The similarities between Obama and Lincoln are inspiring
I live in Springfield, Illinois, where Senator Obama announced his candidacy for President at the Old State Capitol plaza last year. It was one VERY cold day, but thousands of us were there to hear the beginning of his campaign of hope and change. Very eloquent. He's been inspiring us for years as our Senator.

They call this area in Illinois the Land of Lincoln. It was the perfect place for Senator Obama to begin his Presidential campaign.

:D

9. Not to criticize Lincoln...just had enough of war.
The history of that time is maddening - for twenty years at least there was opportunity for legislation that would have been much more sensible and favorable to all parties and ended slavery. The congressional record reflect little but foolhardy stubborn pride on one side and condescending preachy arrogance on the other...resulting in 500k dead and countless local economies plunged into starving poverty for generations. I remember reading of the community Carter grew up in, the account was that it had been devastated during the civil war and had not yet really gotten back on its feet, economically.

So I know wars will be inherited, but I still hope for better.

10. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction... Obama is the reaction to Bush...
It's not unreasonable to expect great things in light of the terrible things we've been handed.

11. I don't think it profits anyone to heap expectation on Obama.
I'm just grateful for his level head and his energy and his humor. That's enough, a lot, enough, for now.

12. I just found it interesting that I found this article on
the site, "Watching America". Some foreign countries have high expectations; that can't be bad. They're as anxious as we are for change.

14. Sure! I just watched two foreign reporters (UK, France) report
that their audience is pulling for Obama. They see him as a redemptive figure. :)
