Teresa Heinz Kerry: It's Pennsylvania's turn - vote for Obama
Election days are always special to me. I grew up in a land where there were no election days.

The Mozambique of my childhood was governed by a right-wing dictatorship in far-away Portugal. My father, a wise and good man, was 71 years old when he voted for the first time. I never cast a ballot until I became a citizen of the United States. But when I did, it was for a young man who spent years teaching me about the needs of Pennsylvania's working families and the good our government can do for them -- my late husband, Sen. John Heinz. He helped me learn how precious a right suffrage is -- as a weapon against tyranny; as an instrument of hope, progress and change.

That is why, this year, I will cast my vote in the April 22 Pennsylvania primary for Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

Pennsylvania needs a president like Barack Obama, someone who understands the tough times Pennsylvanians are facing. Raised with much love but in challenging circumstances by a single mom and grandparents, he knows firsthand the stress and financial pressures families face. When he beat the odds and put himself through college, he could have made good money with a big-name law firm anywhere in the country, but he chose the gritty streets of Chicago's South Side where, as a community organizer, he worked helping families like his build better lives.

5. She runs the Heinz Family Philanthropies
whose major concerns are women's health and financial security, and the environment.

HFP sponsors an annual conference on women's health and the environment.

Senator John Heinz died in a plane crash in S.E. Pa in April 1991. Their three sons were adults by then so perhaps it "doesn't count", but I would say the combination of that tragedy and her work on women's issues would give her some insight.

and accomplishments.

She spent her formative years going from village to village to assist her father bring medical care to African villages that had no access to doctors.

Did YOU spend YOUR adolescence and teen years doing anything so selfless?

Because of her knowledge of the poor's medical needs she has used the Heinz Foundation to put health clinics in neighborhoods that needed them most. You pretend that she hasn't as you smear her relentlessly.

She is also this nation's LEADING PHILANTHROPIST on environmental issues, especially environmental racism that is seen every day in the poorest neighborhoods.

Your continuing smearing of Teresa is an expression of evil intent.

22.  You do not need to experience something to understand it
From the actions of THK, she does understand the problems and via her foundation works to help them.

13. A thoroughly insulated white woman who will always be able to live well
no matter how bad the problems facing our country. While many are on the verge of being sucked into the giant sink hole, the former First Lady elect weighs in.

Yeah, voters should listen to her. :eyes:

Edited on Sun Mar-23-08 01:48 PM by blm
I will bet anything she has faced far greater dangers and risks to help the lives of the poor and the needy more than you, both Clintons, and many of her detractors have - PUT TOGETHER!

23. The people who loved and trusted her
as the woman who has done a huge amount for Pittsburgh via her foundation, as the wife of their former Senator, or as the wife of Senator John Kerry could well be moved by this beautiful endorsement. She incidentally was never the First Lady elect - though she should have been.

Incidentally, your avatar is also a "thoroughly insulated white woman who will always be able to live well no matter what the problems facing the country".

Teresa Heinz Kerry is a brilliant, very good person.

14. Teresa is The Bomb! She Embodies The Best Spirit of Bipartisanship
For all of you around here that throw around the "sexism" term, here is a true example of a woman that we can love with gusto. Someone who truly speaks from her heart, not from calculation. Someone who believes in a progressive foreign policy, not some triangulating militarism performed for the sake of political theater.

You go, girl!

because she does not support the right candidate.

Very sad to see some H. Clinton supporters sink to this level.

...remember when she referred to herself as one in the 2004 campaign? I mean, I like her, but don't some of these smart people know not to say certain things?

33. She was born in Africa
Travis Smiley referred to her as African American when the Kerrys did there book tour. In fact, he joked with Senator Kerry that that was why he wanted him to win. I watched every C-SPAN or other THK appearance I heard of and I never heard her refer to herself as African - she did mention being born in Mozambique. Last February, she went with Kerry to Africa on a SFRC trip to look into the implementation of the AIDS program that he and Frist had written the legislation for. (Among the people they met with was the white mayor of Capetown, who like Teresa had marched against apartheid. I assume the mayor of a town in South Africa can be called African right? If not what is she?

I met people who voted for Kerry because of his wife.
