Kucinich story at front-top of nytimes.com

From the article:

His campaign manager is a "transformational kinesiologist" — a practitioner of the healing arts — who has never before worked in politics.

Do tell....

of course the NY Times is, as always, hard at work playing the word connotations game. Let's take a look at how they play the game:

Some words and phrases from the article:

in the headline: "Past Defeat"

From the first paragraph: "His city was in financial default — the embarrassment of the nation. His political career was in tatters, his bank account dangerously low. Not even the radio talk shows would hire him."

No mention of course of the eventual $100 million his actions actually saved Cleveland residents.

Of course, the article is careful not to mention Dennis's biggest attraction to many supporters: he is someone who has a history of fighting corporations, instead of kowtowing to them. That idea just finds too much resonance with the voters these days.....

1. The NY Times is an unabashed defender of the ruling class
We will never be able to turn this country around for as long as the ruling class holds the reigns of power.

3. Starts bad, ends better
It does mention the Muny Light thing later in the article. I don't know why these articles all have to beat the hell out of a candidate for the first 6 paragraphs before they ever say anything positive. It's very annoying.

4. Thank you!
and I've noticed the NYT seems to do it to almost all of them! Even Dean gets a fair amount of crap slung in the NYT!

13. true, true...in the end, it may come down to simply the amount of exposure
as long as the images are not too ominous. It seems to be hard to cause a candidate's poll numbers to go down using JUST words. You need dark imagery and photos. TV does that really well.

6. must have taken careful coordination and effort to get
an anti-marijuana ad spot next to the article on Dennis

how can one miss it?

is this 'character assassination' through 'subliminal association'?

or, has this ad always been in this 8-part series?

7. I enjoyed this article on Dennis
I think they took a more balanced and fair approach than many others have. I wish more people would read this one.

8. "transformational kinesiologist" ...Hmmph!
Anyone else think this is one big reason for why DK is so low in the polls?

I am a DK supporter and volunteer (I even met him a few weeks ago), but I have to say that his judgment in delegating authority with respect to his campaign looks none too good, if this campaign manager/His campaign manager/transformational kinesiologist is any guide to go by.

Why can't we have someone who really wants to stand up for the little guy, as Kucinich obviously does, and at the same time, is willing to use more conventional -- and effective -- methods to get into a position to do something about it?

With the kind of real honest-to-goodness liberal credentials DK most obviously has, you would think that there would be ALL KINDS of experienced political people willing to do this job.

This is really sad....

11. Nah, most campaign managers are prostitutes. They do it for money
and money alone. Only the amateurs (by definition!) do it for love.

10. It's better than $100M -- he saved Clevelanders $300M so far.
The NYT is Media Inc's flagship. Anyone who expects them to be on our side in any way needs to take 2 aspirin and a stiff double whisky.

12. Yer right Mairead
The NY Times is a rag.
But, I'm getting so I'm grateful for any crumb of attention
they'll give the good candidates. Therefore I'm happy
to see them acknowledge the existance of Kucinich,
a great great man.

in the magazine that depicted him as some crazy nut.

15. This one was part of a series
The article said it was eighth in a series.

I'm glad they had someone who attempted objectivity write it.

Nice work.

16. The author spends the first half of the article mocking Kucinich
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 01:15 AM by Dover
and establishing him as a nut, then proceeds to suggest that "others" are doing the mocking...and for the very things the author chose to mock him for.

"It would be easy to dismiss Mr. Kucinich as nothing more than a vanity candidate, to mock his veganism and his relationship with Shirley MacLaine, and some do. One member of Congress, a Republican, called him "a flake."
